Today marks the start of an exciting journey between Cup Of Uji and County Government of Kajiado through the signing of an MoU for the provision of daily porridge to all ECDE learners in the county. The MoU has been signed by H.E Martin Moshisho the Deputy Governor, representing Kajiado County government and Mr Francis Otieno Amonde, representing Cup Of Uji. The signing was witnessed by Kajiado County's CECM for Education Madam Janet Sereu, the Chief Officer for Education Madam Naomi Parinkoi and the Director ECDE Mr John Sipitiet. It's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and we are grateful to individuals who sponsor our students through high school and university education and partners like Krones who currently support 6 students out of the over 20 students we have under our #BuildingLIVESScholarship program; the late Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” According to The World Bank WDI Report 2022, every US $ 1 spent on education, increases a country's GDP by over $ 20 on average. www.cupofuji.org MPESA Paybill number: 891300, Account number: HOPE #EndPoverty #NoPoverty #Education

#WorldFoodDay Fighting #hunger while driving the #education of school children in Kenya through #schoolmeals . www.cupofuji.org #CupOfUji #PartnershipsForGood #WorldFoodForum #WorldFoodDay2024
🌱 On this #WorldFoodDay, we reflect on the impact and progress we’ve seen around the world – spurred by our partners who are transforming food systems and feeding the most vulnerable people: children. One of the most inspiring? Cup Of Uji, a Kenyan organization on a mission to improve the lives of young learners with nutritious school meals, many sourced from climate-resilient crops like sorghum. This includes students at Athi River Primary School, south of Nairobi where the effects of #climatechange make it even harder for families to serve a meal every day. Today marks #WorldFoodDay, an initiative by FAO to raise awareness and drive action for those suffering from #hunger. This year's theme, "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future," emphasizes the importance of ensuring access to healthy diets for all. But picture this: close to 10 million school children in Kenya still lack access to #schoolmeals . At Cup of Uji, we are striving to bridge the school meals gap by providing a daily nutritious #CupOfUji (cup of porridge), ensuring that no child is left behind. To be able to fight hunger and drive the education of school children in Kenya, we need your support. We are currently looking to raise an additional 153,000 cups of porridge at Ksh 10/= per cup, even as we push towards feeding 100,000 school-going children daily. 10th October marked World Porridge Day, and what a journey it has been! From serving just over 100 cups of porridge daily in 1 county in 2011 to now over 17,000 cups of porridge daily across 6 counties, with a cup of porridge costing KSh.10/=, we have made incredible strides in addressing #hunger and #malnutrition in communities across Kenya while also driving the #education of Kenya's children. We could not have achieved all these without the support of all our supporters, partners, friends, and the communities we serve. Here are a few milestones we have realised along the way: 1. Fortified porridge flour: We transitioned from using pure maize flour, moved to pure millet flour to currently using fortified porridge flour (a mixture of maize, millet, soya, vitamins and vital nutrients), in line with the findings from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ’s 2017 Goalkeepers Report on malnutrition. This shift has enabled us to better nourish the children we serve in the 6 different counties, ensuring they receive vital nutrients. 2. Increase in school enrolment: Our provision of a daily nutritious #CupOfUji (cup of porridge) has contributed to a significant increase in school enrolment, encouraging more families to send their children to school and ensuring access to both education and nourishment. 3. Reduction in early pregnancies and child marriages in the schools we support: We have observed a reduction in early pregnancies and marriages among girls in the schools we support, promoting gender equality in education. This aligns with insights from the Girl Capital report by the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) demonstrating how interventions by organisations such as Cup Of Uji can help keep girls in school and on track for a brighter future. 4. Clean cooking: With climate change being one of the major causes of hunger and malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, we are embracing clean cooking methods. Thanks to our partners Sheffield Africa Ltd , BURN , and The Rockefeller Foundation , we are addressing both environmental challenges and food insecurity. We are now looking to grow our impact to feeding 100,000 school children daily (With 10/=, you guarantee a cup of porridge for one child, for a day and you can use MPESA Paybill number: 891300, Account number: HOPE , to support). Special thanks to the supporters who have joined us on our journey since 2011. Together, let us continue to fight hunger, drive education and empower communities, one cup of porridge at a time. www.cupofuji.org
