Having freshly graduated from Kenyatta University in December 2022, a typical day for me involved looking up for entry level or internship opportunities on LinkedIn, in Newspapers and religiously skimming through a very resourceful WhatsApp group as far as career opportunities were concerned. The group recommended to me by a friend would later present an opportunity that fortified my career opportunities - seeking wits. Enthusiastically and optimistically, I would subsequently frequent my mail box to progressively check responses to my applications, hoping for the best. The wait did not last long. On 12/05/2023, I received a call and follow-up email from Ann Linet Kawira to attend the Cohort 3 3-day InMySteps Foundation - an initiative by Rise & Learn Global - interns training at CITAM Valley Road, Kenya. The training majorly characterised by in-depth lessons about mentorship, networking, personal branding, the process of job seeking and application (from crafting a good CV and coverletter to acing an interview) became a catalyst that catapulted me to a very significant season of my life as a purpose-driven and curious chemist and human being. "How do I want to live my life? What matters to me, and what can I do with the little or much in my custody to make a difference? How about the chemistry I learn? How do I translate that from paper to being a solution to some of the world's most pressing challenges?" I regularly questioned my frontal lobes after the training. Learning that to whom much - which is relative - is given, much is expected, I took deliberate steps that have progressively led me through an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding self-discovery journey. Perusing through my journal, my greatest lesson as an InMySteps Foundation cohort 3 mentee and cohort 4 mentor underscores the great power of passing on the baton. Think about this, even if life would span two hundred years, one would definitely make a difference, but the work done during their lifetime would not suffice creating paradigms sustaining tens and hundreds of future generations. What then guarantees continuity and sustainability other than imparting ones values, skills, and knowledge on, and sharing their wins and stripes with the next generation? Mentorship concreted by vision, consistency, and the courage to always take that bold first step is thus imperative in re-imagining and changing the world for the better. I am therefore very grateful to Emily Kamunde-Osoro PCC and her team for the great vision of empowering fresh graduates - like myself in 2023- with life mentorship. Susan Kiamba thank you for relentlessly supporting me. Despising not the days of my relatively humble beginnings because though it may be small, my latter days shall increase, I will continue running for the good cause by God's Grace. To all fresh graduates, please watch out for the InMySteps Foundation Cohort 5 training. It is a life-changing opportunity. Blessings Galore🤍
