In a significant move to enhance healthcare services in Garissa County, Kenya, the County Department of Health, in partnership with Amref Health Africa in Kenya officially introduced the vendor (BOC) responsible for installing a state-of-the-art medical oxygen plant at Dadaab Level 4 Hospital. This initiative represents a critical milestone in the country's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that medical facilities have reliable access to life-saving oxygen. One of the major advantages of establishing the medical oxygen plant at Dadaab Level 4 Hospital is the reduction in both distance and costs associated with procuring oxygen from Garissa County level 5 Hospital. Previously, medical facilities in the region faced logistical and financial challenges in sourcing oxygen, often resulting in delays in patient care. With the new plant in place, healthcare providers will benefit from a more efficient and cost-effective solution to meet the growing demand for medical oxygen. A formal site handover was conducted, during which the vendor, BOC, was shown the designated area for the installation of the medical oxygen plant. Key county health officials, consultant (Fortec Medix Supplies Limited) and representatives from AMREF provided guidance and insights to ensure a smooth implementation process. This initiative is expected to bridge the gap in the supply of medical oxygen, a crucial resource for emergency and intensive care cases in the region. #amref4phc The Global Fund Dr Ndirangu Wanjuki Dr. Githinji Gitahi MARY MUTHONI MURIUKI, CBS, HSC. Earlier today, we had the honor of hosting H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of the Republic of Kenya, at the Amref exhibition booth at the ongoing East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit (EARGHSS 2025) in #Mombasa. He commended Amref Health Africa’s leadership in community-led health initiatives and expanding human resources for health through Amref International University (AMIU) —critical pillars in advancing #GlobalHealth security in Africa. Addressing delegates at the summit, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta reflected on key lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasised the urgent need for #Africa to strengthen its preparedness, resilience, and self-sufficiency in health security. “COVID-19 caught us flat-footed. This summit is an opportunity to ensure that Africa is no longer excluded or ignored in major global health decisions. We must prioritise setting up research institutes and vaccine manufacturing factories to ensure timely access for our people. Cooperation, partnership, and understanding—these will guarantee the future safety and prosperity of our continent.” As Amref, we remain committed to this vision—building strong, people-centered health systems, investing in local health workforce development, and advocating for Africa’s self-reliance in #vaccine manufacturing and research. This morning, Dr. Githinji Gitahi, delivered a powerful opening address at the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit (#EARGHSS2025) in Mombasa, proudly co-hosted by Amref Health Africa and partners. “Africa faces the highest number of disease outbreaks globally—a challenge amplified by diverse ecological systems, underdeveloped healthcare infrastructure, and socio-economic disparities,” said Dr Gitahi. “These risks are further exacerbated by global warming, extreme weather events, and shifting geopolitical realities.” His message was clear: The time for talk is over. The time for action is now. Global health security begins in our communities, and our defenses must be built on: 1️⃣ Community-led health initiatives as the first line of defense. 2️⃣ Primary healthcare systems as the second line. 3️⃣ Regional, collaborative, and one-health approaches as the third line. Amref Health Africa is committed to advancing this vision by: ✔️ Strengthening primary healthcare systems across Africa. ✔️ Expanding human resources for health through the Amref International University (AMIU), whose 10000 student capacity campus is opening this year. ✔️ Convening partners at the Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC), 2025 in Kigali, where we will address Africa’s health security and socio-ecological determinants of health. #AHAIC2025, taking place from March 2–5, 2025, is a pivotal platform for driving Africa’s health agenda and championing homegrown, collaboratively driven solutions.
