As the data centre industry works to reduce its environmental impact, much of the focus has been on power consumption and operational emissions. However, a significant yet often overlooked contributor to carbon emissions in this sector is the concrete used in construction. Hyperscale giants such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, Meta, and Microsoft have pointed out in an open letter that materials commonly used in data centre buildings account for 23% of global carbon emissions, with concrete alone responsible for 11%. Concrete production, particularly the manufacture of Portland cement, is a major source of CO2 emissions, contributing to approximately 8% of global emissions. After a record year in 2023, sales of construction equipment produced in Germany fell in 2024 by 21 per cent in real terms and 20 per cent in nominal terms. The biggest decline was in construction equipment, down 26 per cent, followed by earthmoving equipment, down 23 per cent, and road construction equipment, down 14 per cent. One of the main reasons for this is that sales of construction equipment in the home market of Germany slumped by 31 per cent, the biggest decline since 2009. The European market also saw sales fall by more than 20 per cent. The gloomy global economy meant that exports outside Europe were unable to improve the picture significantly. Forget bricks! The University of Maine's BioHome3D is revolutionizing construction with 3D-printed homes made from recycled wood waste. Traditional materials like cement and steel contribute 21% of global CO2 emissions, but this eco-friendly approach reduces waste and emissions while tackling housing shortages. Each home uses 10 tons of wood residuals, with Maine’s sawmills producing enough waste to build 100,000 houses annually. Instead of burning or composting wood waste, it's now upcycled into sustainable housing. Could this be the future of construction?
