☀️ Rising day- and nighttime temperatures, #heat waves, and heat stress 🥵 are increasingly prevalent due to #climatechange and can cause severe impacts on human #health, #livelihoods, and wellbeing as well as natural ecosystems. 👏🏿We welcome the UN Secretary-General's Call to Action on this important thematic area for climate change #adaptation, addressing #lossanddamage, mitigation, and a #justtransition! ➡️ SLYCAN Trust researches how heat affects different sectors, such as the #fashion and garment industry in countries like #SriLanka 🇱🇰, and how #riskmanagement instruments can protect those who are vulnerable--such as #entrepreneurs, artisans, small businesses, or workers in textile factories. This builds on our research on #urban heat adaptation plans, climate #risktransfer, and non-economic loss, as well as our work on entrepreneurship, youth, gender, health, human mobility, and other relevant thematic areas. NEW: the UN Secretary-General has just released a Call to Action on Extreme Heat. Monday was the hottest day in recorded history. Cities and communities across most of the Northern Hemisphere are suffering through a series of deadly heatwaves. The UNSG's call to action brings together resources on extreme heat from 10 UN agencies, including WHO, and calls for international cooperation in four critical areas to address extreme heat across the world: -Caring for the vulnerable -Protecting workers -Boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science -Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy. 📣 #Senegal 🇸🇳 has kicked off its in-country process under the G7/V20 Global Shield against Climate Risks with the first stocktaking workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday in Dakar. ➡️ Pre-arranged financial solutions (such as #insurance) can be an important part of the toolkit for managing #climaterisks in an increasingly complex and changing environment 🌍. For these solutions to be effective, it is vital to design and implement them through #inclusive, #evidence-based, and multi-stakeholder-driven processes. 👋 Our fellow Gabriel Pierre D. NDIAYE was at the workshop to contribute to a successful outcome that will help build long-term #resilience in Senegal and protect those who are most vulnerable to climate change impacts and climate-induced #lossanddamage. Senegal’s Ministry of Finance and Budget is convening key stakeholders this week to discuss strategies for strengthening Senegal’s financial resilience to #climatechange. The goal of the workshop, which is co-organised by the Global Shield and the World Bank is to present the results and conclusions of the Bank’s diagnostic on climate and disaster risk financing and to kickstart the In-Country Process of the Global Shield. Developing a national climate and disaster risk financing strategy will enable Senegal to mobilise innovative funding to respond appropriately to climate shocks. 🌍🇧🇩 Our team members Kavindu Ediriweera, Dulanga Witharanage & Henry Mitchel were a part of the cohort attending the South Climate Conclave: Sylhet Chapter, focused on Sustainable Energy to Mitigate Climate Change last week. 🗓️The event, organised by GenLab in collaboration with SDJF (Sri Lanka), ORF (India), ISSR (Nepal), and NUSAN, is part of the Climate Action Champions Network (CACN) supported by the U.S. Department of State. 50 cohorts from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka participated in a hackathon to refine problem statements, brainstorm ideas, and develop solution-based pitches. ♻️The conclave also brought together South Asian policymakers, climate experts, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss regional climate policies and the potential for sustainable energy solutions through cross-border collaboration and capacity-building measures. #ClimateAction #SustainableEnergy #SouthClimateConclave #CACN #ClimateChampions #Genlab
