Today, our Lovat team is honored to participate in the Joint Venture Builder Incubator (VBI) and AI Accelerator (AIA) Showcase Event in Edinburgh! The event brought together 35 early-stage startups and 12 more mature companies to present their innovative solutions and business strategies. Our Lovat team met many startup founders, investors and innovators. We are sincerely grateful to the organizers for the opportunity to be a part of this event, great networking and warm atmosphere!

I have been asked a lot lately about the tariff policy of the United States. What will this tariff war lead to? How will it affect e-commerce? If we look at the reasons behind it, I’d like to point out that in Europe, Canada, and other countries where VAT applies when a parcel crosses the customs border, tax collection has been reinforced in recent years. The low-value goods concept was introduced, eliminating de minimis (import without tax and excise duty collection). As a result, remote sellers are now required to pay VAT when selling to Europe including the UK and some other countries with VAT. In the US, there is no such indirect tax, meaning many businesses ship their goods there, putting local companies at a disadvantage. In my opinion, Trump is trying to balance the tax burden between local companies and importers, who sometimes avoid paying taxes altogether. I believe that tariffs will affect e-commerce, but it’s like stopping water with a sieve – it will flow a little slower, but globalization and the desire to buy from all over the world cannot be stopped.

The day was filled with insights on Innovations in Energy sources, the future of AI, and networking. ⚡ One of the day’s highlights was the Advanced Energy presentation by David Peto , who demonstrated how SMBs are actively filling in the production chain of the most advanced Fusion Energy production. In several projects, it achieved scientific breakeven, producing more energy from fusion than the laser energy input. He expects revolution here in the near future. Big thanks to Dr. Nikolay Malkin from Edinburgh University for his talk about The Latest Trends in GenAI and for sharing his views about the safety of AI models.
