🚨 Global IT Outage Highlights Fragility of Interconnected Systems 🚨 This week, a major tech meltdown affected sectors worldwide, from airlines and hospitals to retailers and more. Two big issues with Microsoft systems revealed just how vulnerable our interconnected tech infrastructure can be. On Thursday, Microsoft Azure had a huge outage in the central U.S., causing problems for many clients, including some airlines. Then on Friday, a flawed security update from CrowdStrike hit many Windows devices. This update, affecting CrowdStrike's Falcon Sensor software, led to major disruptions because it's crucial for cybersecurity tasks. Security experts said fixing these systems would need manual intervention, which is slow and resource-heavy. This incident didn't just disrupt services; it showed the big challenges in maintaining strong cybersecurity today. Branko Džakula, our cybersecurity expert and founder, shared his thoughts. He noted the likely rise in cyberattacks after such outages and stressed, "Companies need to be proactive in their cybersecurity measures. This includes implementing test environments for software updates and having a solid business continuity plan. Preparing for the next possible outage isn't just about tech solutions but also strategic planning and ongoing IT team education." As we navigate this complex digital world, it's crucial for organizations to learn from these incidents and strengthen their defenses to prevent future disruptions. 🌐🔒

The dust should not settle down after the impact that Crowdstrike had on the global cloud infrastructure and Windows devices. Even though this was not a security data breach, it was a security incident of epic proportions that should be a wakeup call for all impacted organisations. On one hand, this incident highlights the vulnerability of the global internet infrastructure and high dependency on third-party cloud infrastructure, this will and should not change and this dependency has accelerated innovation and the economy to enormous scales. This dependency needs to be managed better through business continuity plans and patch management with internal testing and quality control before applying patches and updates to rest of the users in the company. Large corporations and software providers will make mistakes again, it's our job to be prepared when they do. On the other hand, this incident also brings to light the troubling reality that software companies are rarely held accountable for significant outages and cybersecurity breaches. The financial and legal repercussions for such extensive disruptions are often so minor that companies lack the incentive to implement more substantial improvements. Unless software companies are held financially accountable for defective products and held more accountable for security incidents, I doubt we will keep up with good security practices in the future. Good news for cybercriminals, bad news for us. Thanks to TV N1 / CNN exclusive news channel affiliate and TV E Montenegro for reaching out for comment on this dire incident that was unfolding on Thursday through Friday. I had the opportunity to address the details of the incident and recommend quick solutions to mitigating this type of risk and it's repercussions on organisations around the globe.

Using this opportunity to share my amazement and gratitude for Association of Security Managers of Montenegro for perfectly executing their first conference 'Security - Challenges and perspectives' under the auspices of the President of Montenegro. 🇲🇪 It is motivating to see how fast this organisation was able to progress in a short timespan and obtain massive support, including unreserved support of UN1QUELY and Intell Informed. Huge thanks to the organisations president Dragan Radulović and his team for their efforts, enthusiasm and energy. The future of security practice in Montenegro is bright, and we are honoured to be a part of it. I had a privilege of speaking at a panel on the subject of "Contemporary Security Challenges" sharing the stage with esteemed colleagues and friends from the industry. The key to sustainable cybersecurity practice is addressing the cybersecurity skills gap in our country to ensure execution of the National Cybersecurity Strategy of 🇲🇪 and longterm fight against cybercrime, time to act is now and education in cybersecurity needs more attention and support. UN1QUELY Academy is already leading these efforts and we are looking for partners to join us, as well as new batch of students hungry for knowledge!

🚀💡✨📈💼 I want to share some short lessons (mistakes - picked the top 5) from two startup incubators, an additional two startup accelerators, and pitch events and pitch competitions in Frankfurt, Chicago, Austin, and New York respectively that I hope the startup community may find useful. 1. People (VCs for example) might not care too much about your brand new idea. Try to flip the roles and put yourself in the investor shoes - it might be good to start with your achievements (why you), especially if it leads to your current traction. The intro would then make more sense than the TAM or product for early-stage startups. Some people who are experts in explaining why they don’t care (such as Paul O'Brien) might be very useful as mentors on the way. 2. Fail-fast methodology - a well-known one in the product space, but in practice, this might also mean changing your deck slides a bit before a particular meeting. 3. Huge events such as #SXSW are great, but definitely come prepared with the right target group and events. Although it might sound logical, I’ve noticed that many startups are aware of their potential ideal (target) customer but are not aware of their target investor or partner which might lead to many unnecessary conversations. 4. Startup accelerators can accelerate you, but also take too much of your time. It is as valuable as you make it at that point in time, so I would say that there is a bare minimum requirement to join one - especially in the early stage with a clear idea and a few potential pilot customers who validated the idea would be a bare minimum starting point. Otherwise, focus on your customers. 5. Celebrate milestones, since this is a long-term trip. Also, what I am still trying to figure out and practice is to be able to see the right things to prioritize, in order to not have to make 2. point more times than needed. I am also curious to hear what you all think. At the end, I will leave a few folks that have been valuable during this intensive past few months (or much more) journey that also have a fair share of experience here. 🚨 Despite widespread knowledge and documentation of #SQLi vulnerabilities over the past TWO decades, software manufacturers continue to develop products with this defect, which puts many customers at risk. Our latest #SecurebyDesign Alert, published with FBI, urges software manufacturers to conduct a formal review of code to identify and eliminate this class of vulnerability.
