BirdLife Malta ’s LIFE PanPuffinus! project is proud to launch Malta’s permanent #seabird conservation exhibition in collaboration with Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park 🐦 At the launch event, we welcomed the St. Paul’s Bay and Msida Scouts Groups, where they enjoyed a talk on the LIFE PanPuffinus! project, tested their knowledge with a quiz on Maltese seabirds, and competed in a fun board game competition. 🎉 The participants received project mugs, comic books, and board games as gifts! 🎁 The interactive experience allows visitor centre attendees to explore unique wildlife while highlighting the urgent need to protect Malta’s natural environment as a seabird breeding area. 🌿 The Majjistral Nature and History Park welcomes you to explore the exhibition: Safeguarding Seabirds in the Mediterranean Sea, open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 15:00, and the park’s trails are open 24/7 for your enjoyment! 📽️ Footage and editing by Yusuf Gamal

In an opinion piece published today by our Head of Conservation Nicholas Barbara on Euractiv , we set the record straight on what a definitive sentence condemning finch trapping could spell for Malta's biodiversity. The piece was published in response to an opinion piece issued last week by Malta's hunting federation defending Malta's research derogation on finch trapping. A final verdict by the European court of justice is expected tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/dP2r6DWe

The front cover of Il-Ħuttafa 183 (Jul–Aug 2024) – which has just been mailed out to our young members – features a young Dusky Grouper, pic by editor Victor Falzon. The editorial deals with loud fireworks and the stress they cause nature. Local news features this summer's bumper turtle breeding (also the topic on the Bank of Valletta plc page), while on the international front it's good news for a wild US river. Being the summer issue, features about the sea are not lacking, with a page devoted to marine crabs, a new programme about sea life from Heritage Malta, and a spread of a stunning Bull Ray (pic by Desiree Falzon). Thais Amaral, from the Malta National Aquarium Complex, writes about sea-urchins, while Desirée Falzon explains why seas are salty. Young birderwatcher Tommy Gatt tells us his birding experiences, while student Carly Bonnici records a day in the life of a Rock-centaury. There's also history-making news from a Dinja Waħda Garden, a fight between geckoes, a fact file about the Broad Scarlet dragonfly, and an ERA feature about birds as pollinators. Plus 10 more birds from the Malta Bird Checklist, a colour-in pic and junior art gallery. In publication since 1994, Il-Ħuttafa is a bi-monthly nature magazine that is mailed to all Junior and Family members of BirdLife Malta, and to over 2,000 primary school students. 👉 You can find out more about the magazine and have a look at past issues here: bit.ly/Il-Ħuttafa ✍️ To start receiving it, become a member here: bit.ly/JoinKlabbĦuttaf

Autumn bird #migration is in full swing! 🌍✨ After completing their nesting period, many European birds are embarking on an incredible journey to Africa, escaping the colder, shorter days in Europe. 🏞️ #Buskett Forest plays a key role in this migration. As a protected bird sanctuary, it's a safe resting spot for birds of prey. After crossing from Sicily during the day, these majestic creatures stop to rest in Buskett's trees, ready to continue their journey to North Africa the next morning. But after traveling thousands of kilometers from northern Europe and crossing the Mediterranean, their journey is sometimes tragically cut short by illegal #hunting. 😔 👉 For more detailed info (including the list of bird sanctuaries and protected beaches) about this year's autumn hunting season visit our website from where you can also download a guidance sheet (in 🇬🇧 and 🇲🇹) with details about what is permitted or illegal during the hunting season: http://bit.ly/BLMhunting. 🔍 Have you witnessed illegal hunting?
