On Saturday, March 29, at 10am, a coalition of organisations will hold an event to launch the campaign Manoel Island: Post Għalina - Campaign Launch. This campaign advocates for the creation of a public park on Manoel Island, accessible to all. Currently, the concession agreement between the Maltese Parliament and MIDI for the development of Manoel Island into residential and commercial buildings is being renegotiated. This presents a unique moment in time — an opportunity to reshape the future of Manoel Island into a green public open space that benefits everyone. The campaign’s main request will also be presented as a Parliamentary Petition, and the public is encouraged to sign and share it. BirdLife Malta supports the call for a green public space in the heart of Malta’s most urbanised region. Sign the petition & make your voice heard! 🖋️👇 https://lnkd.in/dUWWwZzt

The Yelkouan Shearwater (Garnija) depends on the dark to safely return to its nests along our precious Maltese cliffs. But light pollution is putting them at risk. Artificial lights can force these seabirds to abandon their nests, leaving their chicks hungry and threatening the survival of entire colonies, like those at Qammieħ. 🎥 In this reel, Martin Austad from BirdLife Malta's seabird team explains how light pollution is disrupting this species and why urgent action is needed. 👉 We are calling on the authorities to switch to wildlife-friendly lighting on land and sea to protect these iconic seabirds before it’s too late. 🌙 Respect the dark. Protect nature. Act now! Editing by Antonia Micallef. #ProtectOurSeabirds #LightPollution #KeepCliffsDark #BirdLifeMalta #SeabirdFridays

Our LIFE PanPuffinus! Project was featured on EU researcher, a magazine reaching millions of EU citizens and policy makers. Penned by project manager Manya Russo, this article not only provides an introduction to the project, but also addresses the policy work that needs to be done to take the results forward. The issue of seabird bycatch and how to mitigate its impacts is a complex one, with more research needed to fill the knowledge gaps and more policy to regulate it. BirdLife Malta is calling for urgent action to improve waste management in Natura 2000 sites, especially on Comino. Poor waste disposal leads to rodent infestations, endangering vulnerable seabirds like Yelkouan and Scopoli’s shearwaters. We urge authorities to install rodent-proof bins, enforce proper waste disposal, and encourage visitors to take their rubbish home. Let’s protect Malta’s natural heritage together! #SaveOurSeabirds #KeepMaltaClean #Natura2000 #BirdLifeMalta Read more in this article from The Malta Independent on Sunday http://disq.us/t/4tem7gw

Inspiring the Next Generation of Conservationists! 🌍 The LIFE PanPuffinus! team recently hosted 6th form and university students for the Malta Science Students Forum at Salina Nature Reserve. This year’s theme? Bird Migration! 🐦✨ 📖 Students researched and presented studies on bird migration, showcasing their passion for science and conservation. BirdLife Malta team members were also present, delivering the keynote speech on the incredible work of LIFE PanPuffinus —from tracking bird movements to studying diving depths over the last few years. 📡🌊 💡 We love engaging with young minds passionate about science and ornithology! If that sounds like you, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’d love to connect. 🤝✨ 🎥 Watch young voices speak up for nature conservation! They are the key to protecting our wildlife. 🌱🐦 Footage and editing by Antonia Micallef. #YouthForNature #BirdMigration #ScienceMatters #LIFEPanPuffinus #SeabirdConservation #FutureScientists #BirdLifeMalta #SeabirdFridays

BirdLife Malta objects to PA/00064/25 in Naxxar. The proposed development aims to transform a quarry into a commercial zone, a care facility, and a 665-space parking lot. However, this plan directly contradicts local planning policy, as the site is designated as a Strategic Open Gap under policy CG25 which strictly prohibits urban development in such areas. This green buffer remains one of Naxxar’s last open spaces, playing a crucial role in preventing urban sprawl and preserving areas for nature and the community. Rather than allowing further overdevelopment, BirdLife Malta advocates for ecological restoration - converting this site into a green space that benefits both people and wildlife. Read BirdLife Malta's full objection here: https://lnkd.in/dcj4GgRA We encourage residents and the public to submit their objection to PA/00064/25 by April 11th using this link: https://lnkd.in/d3amrTGw

Dwejra (Gozo) is under threat once again from light pollution, and today we have joined scientists and NGOs in calling on the Ministers for the Environment and Gozo to take genuine action to protect it. With various activities ongoing in the vicinity and even at Dwejra itself, we simply cannot afford to lose our night sky heritage and a precious Natura 2000 site of great scientific and natural importance, which hosts significant shearwater colonies. We need the Ministries and their respective authorities to step up and ensure that such sites remain pristine and free from light pollution. Dr. Miriam Dalli Clint Camilleri
