Last year I wrote an essay on the Wuri Ventures website entitled Don't be Afraid of Electric Vehicles in Africa. In recent months announcements from Kenya based companies such as BasiGo, announcing its Series A raising $42m and Zeno, which raised a $9.5 million seed round, have been demonstrations of the pending revolution in electric mobility in Africa. We at Wuri Ventures followed through on our conviction, incubating Solarbox Africa. Solarbox makes light electric vehicles and solar equipped charging stations to lead the electric mobility revolution in Senegal and neighboring regions.  Solarbox recently closed a $1m pre-seed, and is just getting started. A week ago I had the privilege of being on a Climate impact panel at the the Mastercard Foundation Fund for Resilience and Prosperity event in London! More exciting was that I shared this panel with one of Launch Africa Ventures' Portfolio founder and CEO of Wahu Mobility Ltd. - Valerie Labi, Mandy Nyarko MBE and Winfred Kinuthia More importantly, it was also good to hear from the Mastercard Foundation and how they have designed the fund to directly empower high-growth medium-sized SMEs, with financial support, technical assistance and advocacy. This fund will focus on Agriculture, Climate impact, health and the digital economy. Special mention to Mehrad Jaberansari and The Conduit for shepherding the event.

Daryn Munnik represented Launch Africa Ventures at the recent Southern African Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (SAVCA), reconnecting with valued ecosystem friends and meeting new allies—investors, founders, LPs, and service providers! It was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen ties and share insights with ecosystem leaders. He also participated in a panel discussing the transformative trends in African VC. We were reminded of the untapped potential on the continent—despite a tenfold increase in capital over the last decade, Africa still attracts less funding than OpenAI’s latest single-deal raise or Sweden’s annual VC inflow. During the discussion, they highlighted: 📍 How 85% of tech funding is concentrated in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Egypt—while emerging markets like Ghana and Rwanda are gaining attention for their diverse innovations. 📍 Yewande Adewusi’s insights on gender-smart investing underscored our belief that diverse leadership fuels success. 📍 Esther Ndeti’s overview of revenue-based financing offered fresh ideas for founders to grow without diluting ownership. 📍 Kiara Suttner-Tromp shared Havaic’s strategy on exits to secure sustainable returns for investors. As we navigate these trends, the emphasis on solidifying local markets before pursuing international expansion was a powerful reminder of the importance of building strong foundations. 🎉 We are excited to announce our $3.9m seed round + $1.1m in carbon financing! $5m to make Octavia a global leader in DAC.   🚀 This marks a pivotal moment for us as we advance our Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology here in Kenya 🇰🇪. With this funding, we are set to launch Project Hummingbird by December this year—The first DAC+Storage facility in the Southern Hemisphere.   🌟 With Project Hummingbird’s launch, we are on track to to become the second DAC company globally to inject CO2 underground through our CO2 storage partner Cella and to deliver DAC+Storage carbon credits.   🌍 We couldn't be prouder to share that our seed round was co-led by Lateral Frontiers VC and E4EAfrica, with strong support from Catalyst Fund, Launch Africa Ventures, Fondation Botnar, Renew Capital, and lots of support & conviction from our friend & angel Jochem Wieringa.
