  • We wanted to share with you the article from DOMUS: "15 projects that represent contemporary housing in Mexico," in which our project Casa en El Torón II is featured. "Building in a nature reserve is almost an oxymoron but, beyond rhetorical figures and preconceived dissonances, this house in the El Torón Reserve on the coast of Oaxaca, on a 30-hectare conservation site, is an artificial element so integrated into the landscape that it seems to have always belonged". https://lnkd.in/gAgke9_C

  • Our design for Termas El Jabalí was informed by a study of historical precedents. We investigated building types ranging from the Roman Thermae, and the Islamic Hammam, over the Japanese neighbourhood bathhouse Sentō, to the pre-Columbian sweat lodge Temazcal. Our analysis focused on programmatic layout, circulation, temperature differences and natural light. Searching for common traits and a shared performative logic we realized that most precedents are composed of individual chambers that are linked into a clear sequence. These cells contain water, vapor or air with rising temperatures as visitors progress through the suggested thermal circuit, often culminating with the hottest, darkest and most compressed spaces, inducing a visceral and transformative experience, at times even an out of body experience as can happen with the Temazcal. In some examples interstitial spaces such as outdoor pools and courtyards may offer a break from the thermal circuit. Collaboration between Ignacio Urquiza and Max von Werz Termas El Jabalí has received the following recognitions: AR Future Projects awards 2024: winner (hotels and leisure category) The Architectural Review Architecture Masterprize 2023: honorable mention (healthcare and wellness category) Architecture MasterPrize Architecture Masterprize 2023: honorable mention (conceptual architecture category) Architecture MasterPrize

  • Termas El Jabalí is a project of thermal baths located in Tututepec on Mexico’s Oaxaca coast‭. ‬It is part of a 38.6-hectare masterplan consisting of a residential development of 75‭ ‬homes and communal amenities and envisioning a new way of inhabiting the coasts of our country by implementing strategies for environmental conservation and the rehabilitation of a badly damaged mangrove habitat‭. ‬The 490‭ ‬m2‭ ‬building’s design is articulated as a loose sequence of monolithic building volumes linked by a breezy elevated timber walkway‭. ‬A lightweight fly roof‭ ‬ –‬‭ ‬borrowing from the local vernacular architecture of the palapa‭ ‬ –‬‭ ‬echoes the deck‭, ‬lending protection from the elements and facilitating rain-water harvesting‭. The project takes inspiration from historical precedents such as the Roman Thermae and the Islamic Hammam‭, ‬by incorporating the idea of an invigorating thermal sequence whereby water‭, ‬vapor‭, ‬and air temperatures progressively rise as users pass from one volume to the next‭.‬ Users can proceed along the suggested bathing circuit‭, ‬take shortcuts‭, ‬or take breaks in one of the outdoor courtyards which are‭ ‬loosely framed and defined in part by the hard architecture and in part by the soft landscaping‭. ‬Historical precedents further‭ ‬inform how natural light and ceiling heights gradually decrease as visitors progress from space to space‭, ‬culminating in a visceral experience that fully isolates users from their surroundings and the preoccupations of everyday life‭.‬ Collaboration between Ignacio Urquiza and Max von Werz Termas El Jabalí has received the following recognitions: AR Future Projects awards 2024: winner (hotels and leisure category) The Architectural Review Architecture Masterprize 2023: honorable mention (healthcare and wellness category) Architecture MasterPrize Architecture Masterprize 2023: honorable mention (conceptual architecture category) Architecture MasterPrize
