Malaysian SMH Rail to open plant in South Africa   This is what Kannan Ponnusamy, Head of Business Development at SMH Rail Group, told in his interview with Railways Africa Magazine (https://lnkd.in/eKbx2NAK). The facility is being set up in collaboration with SMH’s distributor in Africa, Leruo Rail Africa. It will be launched up and running within two months, following current upgrading activities to specialise in the repair of diesel locomotives and freight cars and the maintenance of wheel sets and bearings.   SMH Rail’s operations in Africa include the overhaul and maintenance of diesel locomotives, including those that have been taken out of service. By now, more than 35 locomotives have been repaired for Tanzania, ten for Zambia and three for Kenya. Mumbai receives first indigenously manufactured monorail train The four-car vehicle is co-produced with the Malaysian SMH Rail Group at the Telangana-based MEDHA SERVO DRIVES PVT LTD (MSDPL) plant. Following dynamic tests, it will be launched on the 21 km Chembur–Sant Ghadge Maharaj line.   The rail contract was concluded with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority in 2021, providing for the delivery of ten such EMUs for INR 5.9 bln ($79.6 mln).   When compared to the currently operating in Mumbai monorail trains by the Malaysian Scomi Rail, the new vehicles are several tonnes lighter, have a 10% higher passenger capacity (568 people per four-car train), and are fitted with signalling and traction systems and improved bogies.
