𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴...
... in October 2024, my team and I proudly flew the Malaysian flag 🇲🇾 high on the world stage!
At about 5am Malaysian time today (5pm in Toronto), Bintang Capital Partners received an award at the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI) PRI In Person Conference 2024.
The team and I are humbled and grateful that the work we have been quietly doing within the impact investing scene has been recognised by UN PRI with a 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱.
This prize marks Bintang out as the first Southeast Asian recipient of a UN PRI award, and we are also the first Asian winner of the Private Markets prize in the history of the PRI Awards.
This win comes at a critical juncture given Malaysia's coming chairing of the ASEAN group of nations in 2025 during which impact investing is expected to be a major focus.
At Bintang we are incredibly proud of this achievement, especially as the win comes on the back of Malaysian Minister of Finance II's Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan's recent unveiling of the National Sustainability Reporting Framework ("NSRF") which outlines the very critical climate transition work which will start with Malaysia's largest companies.
It also comes at a pivotal moment as Malaysia advances its sustainability agenda with the launch of the National Climate Change Policy 2.0 by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Whilst Bintang is incredibly passionate about the positive impact our investments have on people and the environment, we also are big believers in preparedness and future-proofing Malaysian industry for what is to come.
The companies we invest in may not be the giant companies the NSRF is directed towards.
Instead, Bintang invests in Medium Sized Enterprises ("MSEs") which we hope will one day grow into the giants of tomorrow.
For MSEs, preparedness is key - we believe that a gradual approach towards sustainability for MSEs would yield better outcomes than having them experiencing a sudden shock when they graduate into the major leagues.
In that sense, what Bintang does aligns well with Malaysia's long term national interests.
Unfortunately I couldn't make it to Toronto in person for this momentous occasion: long story short, the issuance of my Canadian visa was delayed.
Luckily for us, the incredible Securities Commission Malaysia team comprised of Datin AZALINA ADHAM and Navina Balasingam were on hand to receive the award on our behalf.
Score one more win for Malaysia on the world stage this blessed year of 2024 - and may there be many more victories to come!
