MCMF2024: Plenary 5 – Engage in the Full Panel Dialogue! On 8 August, Bursa Carbon Exchange hosted the Malaysia Carbon Market Forum 2024 (#MCMF 2024). Catch the discussion on environmental attributes driving the energy transition here: https://lnkd.in/gqVeUjas   Plenary 5: Taming the Dragon: The Role of Environmental Attributes in Energy Transition Globally, the current energy system drives about 75% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The energy transition aims to shift to lower carbon footprint energy generation, leading to the emergence of tradeable environmental attributes like carbon credits and RECs. Panellists Ir Yusri Yusof from PETRONAS, Dr Shiun Chen from Sarawak Energy, Roble Poe Velasco-Rosenheim from The International Tracking Standard Foundation: Founder of I-REC, Ir. Yew Hoe Kwok from Cenergi SEA, together with moderator Ashna Mishra from S&P Global, discuss by putting a price on carbon, how these attributes aid the financing of new projects, supporting decarbonisation especially in the hard-to-abate sectors, contributing to the energy transition. While discussing market developments in ASEAN so far, the growing interest in the regionalisation of energy exchange within ASEAN, including the potential for cross-border electricity transactions was discussed. The panel emphasised the need for a transparent and harmonised guide by standard bodies that will serve as a guide for governments and project developers. Transparency and accuracy in project tracking, validation and verification must be upheld, combined with clear communication on the role of attribute use, to enable transparent claims, which in turn will help increase corporate engagement in attribute use. Looking ahead, the panellists expressed hopes for increased consciousness of carbon emissions by organisations in all future transactions and business decisions, which is followed by action. They highlighted the need for collaboration to enhance transparency and equitability in the attributes market in order to scale the industry. It is also anticipated that there will be potential changes in demand patterns driven by global regulations, and hopes for a convergence in the price of environmental assets compared to the compliance markets with the increase in market awareness, where the appropriate green premium will be recognised to help support the industry growth. Key takeaways: 1. Environmental attributes help finance new decarbonisation projects, and are particularly important for hard-to-abate sectors. 2. Growing interest in an ASEAN energy exchange will require projects to have good levels of transparency and traceability to increase corporate engagement. There is a need for a transparent and harmonised guide by standard bodies to kickstart cross-border electricity transactions in ASEAN   #BCX #IETA #VCM #RECS #BursaMalaysia

MCMF2024: Plenary 4 – Dive into the Full Panel Discussion On 8 August, Bursa Carbon Exchange hosted the Malaysia Carbon Market Forum 2024 #MCMF2024, featuring key industry leaders discussing crucial carbon market matters.   Watch the full Plenary 4 discussion here: https://lnkd.in/gqVeUjas. Plenary 4: Nature-Based Projects: The Opportunities & Challenges, and Lessons Learned In 2019, Malaysia offset nearly 65% of its emissions through Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) removals, significantly higher than the global average of 5-15%, by leveraging on 54% of its natural forests cover to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). Panel 4, moderated by Rich Gilmore from Carbon Growth Partners, featured Edward Rumsey from Permian Global, Francois Blignaut from SaraCarbon, Dr Jane Koh, PhD from Southridge Group Malaysia, William Acworth from Pollination, and Liam Marshall from BeZero Carbon, explored the importance of Malaysian NbS projects, opportunities and challenges in NbS implementation, strategies for building local competencies, addressing human rights issues and allegations, and effective public education to dispelling NbS misconceptions. The discussion covered various aspects of NbS projects development, including the challenges of being a pioneer in the field, the importance of accuracy in project verification and validation, and the need for clear communication on the role of carbon credits in decarbonisation plans. The panelists highlighted the correlations between price and high-quality, noting that buyers prefer high-quality credits to avoid risks and ensure positive impacts on the ground. This underscores the importance of avoiding over-crediting and double counting. The panel also addressed the balancing conservation and development, emphasising the importance of sustainable land management and community engagement in NbS projects. They emphasised that community involvement was crucial for the success of NbS projects. By educating communities on sustainable forest use and creating job opportunities, deforestation can be prevented. The session concluded with a powerful call to action: Malaysia has what it takes to develop a robust carbon market. It should capitalise on its natural resources and drive positive change through opportunities in the carbon market. Key takeaways: 1.     Carbon projects development is complex, requiring significant efforts and investments. Thus, it is better to work on high-quality projects that have a higher demand and can command higher prices. 2.     Carbon credits are a crucial part of the decarbonisation toolbox. Clear strategies and integration into broader efforts is needed, including transparent stakeholder communication on their role and benefits. 3.     Effective community engagement and creating local opportunities are essential for successful carbon projects and improving livelihoods. #BCX #IETA #VCM #NbS #BursaMalaysia #ClimateAction

MCMF2024: Plenary 3 – Catch the Full Conversation On 8 August, coinciding with ASEAN’s 57th anniversary, Bursa Carbon Exchange hosted the Malaysia Carbon Market Forum 2024 (MCMF 2024), gathering industry leaders to discuss pivotal carbon market topics. Catch the full conversation on Plenary 3, focused on the ASEAN Carbon Markets, here. Plenary 3: Creating a High-Integrity ASEAN Carbon Market, Facilitating Supplies of High-Quality Carbon Credits ASEAN member countries have a longstanding tradition of collaborating to achieve common goals. Now, they can advance regional sustainability despite headwinds in global carbon markets. Moderated by Fauziah Marzuki from BloombergNEF, Gloyta Nathalang from Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, Thailand Carbon Markets Club & Thailand Carbon Neutral Network (TCNN), Aruna Pradipta from Fairatmos, Dr Renard Siew from Yinson, Dang Hanh from VNEEC discussed the role of the private sector in the development of high-quality carbon credits in ASEAN. Some key barriers identified include lack of demand signals, policy drive, incentives, and knowledge, with organisations needing better access to information and clearer guidelines to understand carbon project development. However, positive regional developments offer hope. Malaysia’s Carbon Market Association (MCMA) aims to unify voices in policy advocacy and talent development. Indonesia has launched a national carbon exchange, Vietnam is moving towards a compliance market, and Thailand is already operationalising a Premium T-VER for international trade. The panel stressed that regional collaboration is key. The ASEAN carbon working group aims to develop a common carbon framework and a shared pool of Validation and Verification Bodies (VVB), to expedite methodology development and address the talent shortage. Applying concepts from existing markets to carbon trading and fostering mutual recognition of methodologies and legal frameworks also help facilitate smoother market operations. Trust and governance are also fundamentals that cannot be ignored. Engaging stakeholders and ensuring transparency is essential to create a high-integrity carbon market that benefits ASEAN countries. Such collaborative efforts can prove that strategic initiatives and regional cooperation can drive meaningful progress with global impact. Stay tuned for more updates on #MCMF2024 as we continue to explore valuable insights shared during the forum. Key Takeaways: 1. Regional challenges include lack of demand signals, policy drive, incentives, and knowledge. However, positive developments in ASEAN markets offer hope. 2. Regional collaboration is crucial. A common carbon framework and a shared VVB pool will address talent shortages and streamline the operations. 3. Much hinges on trust and good governance. Engaging stakeholders and ensuring transparency will be crucial. Watch the plenary video here: https://lnkd.in/gqVeUjas #BCX #IETA #VCM #BursaMalaysia #ASEAN
