Stakeholders in Nigeria’s pastoral farming sector have raised concerns over the lack of quality animal feed, calling for a more efficient logistics system to support livestock farmers nationwide. These issues were discussed during a workshop organized by the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) on technical planning and implementation of the African Pastoral Markets Development (APMD) platform, held in Abuja. “Livestock farming is vital to Nigeria’s economy, yet farmers face ongoing challenges, from limited access to quality animal feed to long distances between production and consumption areas,” the stakeholders noted, listing other constraints such as inadequate insurance, limited storage facilities, and insufficient infrastructure for livestock transport. The Nigeria Soybean Stakeholders Coalition (NSSC) has announced an ambitious target to strengthen protein sufficiency in Nigeria by significantly increasing soybean usage across both livestock feed and human diets. Speaking at the coalition’s inauguration in Lagos, NSSC Chairman Dr. Joe Dada highlighted soybeans as a key solution to Nigeria’s nutritional gaps. “Our mission is to promote protein sufficiency nationwide,” Dr. Dada said, outlining the coalition’s vision to raise soybean use in human diets from 20% to 80% and in livestock feed from 60% to 90%. Ahead of the November 16 Ondo State governorship election, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Agboola Ajayi, has pledged to revive the agricultural sector by promising to activate a cargo airport that would facilitate the export of local farm produce. Supreme ruler of the Zaar-Sayawa ethnic group, Gungzaar-select Air Commodore Ishaku Komo (retd), has issued a stern warning to farmers to exercise caution in the sale of their harvested crops. Speaking at the annual Lemb Zaar cultural festival held over the weekend, Komo expressed gratitude for the bountiful harvest but cautioned against hasty decisions that could lead to food shortages. “We prayed for rain, and God answered our prayers. Ekiti State pig farmers have been urged to be on high alert following threats of African swine fever (ASF) disease. The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, issued a strong warning about the highly contagious viral disease, which could be extremely detrimental to the state’s pig industry. African Swine Fever is a deadly viral disease that can cause high mortality rates in pigs. In a bid to enhance food security and create job opportunities, residents of Iwaya in Lagos State have been trained and encouraged to embrace farming as a sustainable means of livelihood. This call was made during a recent town hall meeting at the palace of the Olu of Iwaya, where agricultural experts gathered to enlighten residents on the opportunities in small-scale farming and livestock rearing. One of the speakers emphasized the importance of individual efforts in tackling food insecurity, urging residents to take advantage of their immediate environment to grow food for personal consumption.
