Six Years of Progress: Transforming Potato Farming in Nyandarua County 🥔🥔 ▶️ For six years, the Potato Value Chain Capacity Building (PCB) Project, funded by the Embassy of Ireland, Kenya, transformed potato farming in Nyandarua County, driving higher yields, better market access, and sustainable agricultural practices. Key Achievements: 👩🌾 6,500+ farmers directly impacted, with 12,000+ more benefiting indirectly. 🥔 2,900+ farmers increased yields by up to 60% through improved production techniques. 💰 900 farmers secured contract farming deals, selling 250 metric tons of potatoes worth nearly $50,000. 📈 Policy Impact: Helped develop key policies like the Crops (Irish Potato) Regulations (2019), Variety Release and Registration, and Seed Certification. 📱 Digital Innovation: Launched Viazi Soko, a digital marketplace connecting farmers to input suppliers and buyers. 🏡 Post-Harvest Solutions: Established a 120-metric-ton potato storage facility to reduce post-harvest losses and provide farmers with secure storage and financial opportunities. ▶️ Farmer Tabitha Wanjiru started with a small plot, but with PCB’s support and training, she adopted modern farming techniques like proper fertilizer use and intentional seed selection, boosting her yields and income. Now, she is training other farmers, especially women and youth, to do the same. ▶️ The PCB project has proven that coordinated agricultural interventions can enhance food security, increase farmer incomes, and create jobs. Now is the time to scale these successes across Kenya and beyond! #ThrowBackThursday! Advancing agroecology for food security! 🌍 From November 5-7, 2024, the Soil Values program participated in the Regional Agroecology Days of the Hauts-Bassins (JRAE) in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Bringing together farmers, researchers, and government officials, the event explored how agroecology contributes to food security and supports sustainable farming. The Soil Values program’s engagement at the 2024 JRAE event reinforced its commitment to supporting Burkina Faso’s agroforestry initiatives for sustainable land management and soil restoration. “Let’s restore degraded agroforestry parks to support the agroecological transition in Burkina Faso," shared Dr. Catherine Dembélé, Tree Specialist of CIFOR-ICRAF. 🐝 Empowering Communities Through Beekeeping in Mozambique 🐝 The Triple Resilience (3R) Program, in partnership with the International Economic Cooperation Institute (ICEI), is fostering economic opportunities for youth, low-income women, Internally Displaced People (IDPs), and Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) beneficiaries through beekeeping in Mozambique's Sussundenga, Búzi, and Nhamatanda districts. ✅ This initiative has: 🏠 Benefitted over 32 families, each managing five beehives 📈 Enabled better production control 🍯 Strengthened technical skills from apiary setup to hive management The program's continuous technical support ensures successful honey production, enhancing food security and nutrition, and promoting sustainable income generation for the most vulnerable families in these districts. With climate change affecting the Beira corridor, diversifying income sources is crucial for farming families in areas affected by extreme events like cyclones.
