Do you know that after a record-breaking July, startup funding in Africa surprisingly dropped to an all-time low in August? Records show that only 27 startups announced funding in August, contrasting the monthly average of more than 40 in the last year. Reports also point to the fact that while the ecosystem is prone to fluctuations, it’s not entirely a losing field in the long run. Despite the bad state of funding in August, the Q3 funding report showed that it had surpassed the totals for both Q1 and Q2, which was largely owed to the funding received by startups in July. https://lnkd.in/d_CXbK-y

“People think social media marketing is a joke, but it takes a lot of work. It’s not just about jumping in front of a camera. There’s planning, strategising, copywriting, editing, and customer research. A lot goes on behind the scenes of a single video before it ever goes live. So, if anyone out there thinks an ad is just casual fun, please—stop it!” - Toluwalope Oyewole https://lnkd.in/dwrHcQR3

Do you know that Starlink’s subscriber base in Kenya skyrocketed from 405 in July 2023 to over 4,850 by March 2024? With its offers of competitive pricing and wider coverage, particularly in remote areas, Starlink is piling pressure on traditional ISPs in Kenya, who charge much higher rates. Currently, there’s an ongoing legal battle between Starlink and Safaricom. For context, Safaricom, the telecommunications giant that recently reported Starlink’s entry to the Communications Authority (CA) for regulatory scrutiny, is now in the hot seat. A local advocacy group, Kituo cha Sheria, has filed a lawsuit against Safaricom, alongside the CA and the Kenya Competition Authority, accusing them of unfair practices linked to the controversial arrival of Starlink. The group argues that Safaricom's demands are unconstitutional and limit Kenyans' access to affordable internet services.

Following the expiration of the deadline for PoS operators to register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a new one—this time for Payment Service Providers (PSPs). The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered Payment Solution Providers (PSPs) to route all Point of Sale (PoS) transactions through certified Payment Terminal Service Aggregators (PTSAs) within 30 days. This regulation aims to enhance the security and oversight of electronic payments by only allowing authorized entities to process PoS transactions.
