Today, July 6th, we commemorate World Zoonosis Day, a global awareness campaign that sheds light on the significance of understanding and combating zoonotic diseases. Zoonosis are infectious disease that are transmitted between species from animals to humans (or from humans to animals). Zoonotic diseases are caused by harmful pathogens like viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi, leading to a wide range of illnesses, from mild to severe and even fatal. The World Health Organization reports that a staggering 60% of human diseases and 75% of emerging infectious diseases have zoonotic origins. As we mark this day, we urge everyone to exercise caution when interacting with animals. Simple precautions like washing your hands after exposure, avoiding bites and scratches, wearing gloves when cleaning animal areas, and seeking veterinary care for your animals can significantly reduce the risk of transmission.
