  • Today, July 6th, we commemorate World Zoonosis Day, a global awareness campaign that sheds light on the significance of understanding and combating zoonotic diseases. Zoonosis are infectious disease that are transmitted between species from animals to humans (or from humans to animals). Zoonotic diseases are caused by harmful pathogens like viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi, leading to a wide range of illnesses, from mild to severe and even fatal. The World Health Organization reports that a staggering 60% of human diseases and 75% of emerging infectious diseases have zoonotic origins. As we mark this day, we urge everyone to exercise caution when interacting with animals. Simple precautions like washing your hands after exposure, avoiding bites and scratches, wearing gloves when cleaning animal areas, and seeking veterinary care for your animals can significantly reduce the risk of transmission. Let's work together to promote a healthier coexistence between humans and animals. Happy World Zoonosis Day! #onehealth #Zoonosis

The Benue One Health Network, in collaboration with the Association of Private Veterinary Medical Practitioners, Benue State chapter, recently launched the RABIES SUPERHEROES PROJECT. This initiative aims to educate school children about the dangers of Rabies, especially considering its high prevalence and the increased risk of dog bites among children. As part of this effort, we conducted Rabies awareness programs in 8 secondary schools within the State( covering Benue North-East, Benue North-West, and Benue South senatorial zones) reaching over 5,000 students in the past two weeks. We are eager to engage more school children, teaching them about Rabies. We deeply appreciate the generous support from Kick Out Rabies Initiative, War Against Rabies Foundation, and CastView Veterinary Consult. A Rabies-free world is attainable through collaboration. Let's unite in this initiative as we combat Rabies together. Picture: DENSSA Model Secondary School Ushongo, Benue State. This project was funded by the IDRC-West African One Health.
