Togo makes history by becoming the first country globally to #eliminate four Neglected Tropical Diseases (#NTDs) This award is a testament to the relentless efforts of the nation of Togo to #EndNTDs. And now these diseases - Guinea worm, lymphatic filariasis, sleeping sickness, and #trachoma - no longer have a place in their country. This is a wake-up call to everyone and all nations. The World Health Organization just announced that Vietnam has officially eliminated trachoma as a public health problem! Vietnam is the 21st country to achieve this remarkable accomplishment, and now more than 8.3 million people in Vietnam are free from the risk of blindness due to trachoma. When control efforts began in Vietnam in the 1950s, the prevalence of active trachoma in some communes was estimated at 50-90%. Since then, the Government of Vietnam with support of partners, including USAID, RTI, FHF and others have supported the government to conduct surveys to monitor prevalence, ensured care to those afflicted, and assisted with the formal documentation of successes to WHO for validation of elimination. https://ow.ly/vUno50TPM55

In times of climate change, we are witnessing the emergence of certain Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in areas which were not at risk before, alongside shifts in transmission patterns. Speakers touched health threats due to climate change, including the rising incidence of dengue fever and the changing habitats of venomous snakes, leading to an increase in snakebite cases.
