I spent my Saturday with fellow Ibadan techies at the Ibadan Non Tech in Tech Gees Connect, discussing career growth. Towards the end of the panel discussion, I shared some things I wish I knew at the start of my career. I used to think that 3-6 months into my career, I should have known everything. I was so hard on myself. While social media inspired me through the success stories of others, it also made me feel like an underachiever. In retrospect, I now understand that if it took me four years to be a graduate of a course at university, then taking 1-2 years to get started and begin to gain profound knowledge in a new profession is absolutely fine. Another thing I spoke about is the concept of transferable skills. Transferable skills are abilities and knowledge that you’ve developed in one context (such as in a previous job, education, or personal experiences) that can be applied to different roles or industries. Transferable skills allow you to apply what you already know to new challenges in a different industry. Highlighting your transferable skills also reduce the time it takes to get up to speed in a new career because you’re not starting from scratch—you already have a foundation to build on. So, here’s still the conclusion for anyone who wants to excel at anything: SHOW UP and BE INTENTIONAL! Special shout out to Kareem Usman, Blessing Adediwura and Bukunmi Ogunkoya for being amazing organizers 🥳 Thank you so much for having me
