Here's what some of the Primary 4 learners who participated in the PLANE-supported Accelerated Learning Holiday Camp have to say. "The best thing that I learned at the camp is to create good words and sentences", says Muhammad. The learners who attended the camp were taught in their mother tongue, Hausa, in alignment with the National Language Policy. This gives them a strong foundation to acquire more knowledge, even in other languages. #UKNGEducation #EducateEveryChild #PLANEProgramme UK in Nigeria DAI Joan Keaney-Bray Zehra Zaidi Abiola Sanusi Nguyan Shaku Feese Innocent Chukwu Jose AKPLOGAN musa Jimoh Federal Ministry Of Education, Nigeria FHI 360 Social Development Direct The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre Diana Agabi Florence Chawai Blessing Akaka Ian Attfield Mikailu Ibrahim Ben French Rasheed Adebesin Akeem Odewale Musbahu Sahabi MEAL DPro G. Over the last Christmas/New Year school break, FCDO-PLANE Nigeria successfully piloted Accelerated Learning Holiday Camps (ALHC) in Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa States. The camps helped Primary 4 learners struggling with reading, writing, and numeracy catch up with peers through a blended approach of Accelerated Learning and Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN). Watch the full video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/d33ek9kT The initiative reached over 14,000 students in 290 schools, with nearly 51% of participants being girls. This effort highlights the programme’s dedication to ensuring no child is left behind due to loss of learning time. #UKNGEducation #EducateEveryChild #PLANEProgramme UK in Nigeria DAI Joan Keaney-Bray Zehra Zaidi Abiola Sanusi Nguyan Shaku Feese Innocent Chukwu Jose AKPLOGAN musa Jimoh Federal Ministry Of Education, Nigeria FHI 360 Social Development Direct The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre Diana Agabi Florence Chawai Blessing Akaka Ian Attfield Mikailu Ibrahim Ben French Rasheed Adebesin Akeem Odewale Musbahu Sahabi MEAL DPro G. Celebrating learning and development beyond language barriers! This year's theme for International Mother Language Day, "Make Languages Count for Sustainable Development", emphasizes the crucial role of mother languages in promoting education, inclusion, and empowerment. Through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office funded FCDO-PLANE Nigeria project, over 500,000 children in Kaduna, Kano, and Jigawa States now have access to learning materials in their mother tongue. The introduction of Hausa as the primary teaching language in state-run primary schools in the three states led to a 15 percent increase in pupils able to read and perform foundational mathematics at the Grade 1 level. Last week I and my team had the pleasure to host the Senior Education Advisor Chrystal Holt and Evidence and learning Advisor Fergal Turner both of Save the Children UK to Kano and Kaduna States to support the FCDO-PLANE Nigeria W3 project in the JKK states and ROOSC project in Kaduna. Chrystal visited and engaged with children in Catch up Clubs, Literacy and Numeracy Boost Clubs and Very Young Adolescent clubs in Ajingi LGA, Kano State to experience hands on, the impact of the project in the children’s lives, their caregivers and community as a whole. She also engaged with facilitators, case workers and community structures such as the Core Groups, Child Protection Committees, Village Savings and Loans Associations who all presented the sustainability plans they have in other to strengthen their communities. In her words. “We often talk more on challenges when there are obvious success to celebrate” also, that “These initiatives combined provide a holistic intervention that is and will continue to support out of school children to enrol and be retained in education throughout Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna States.” These words of course warmed the hearts of the team and such visits stir the charge. Fergal also reviewed the project meal tools and while affirming the project is on track, he encouraged the use of the ‘L’ in MEAL as a base for improving the work we do Looking forward to experiencing more. The PLANE programme acknowledges the Kano State Government’s commitment to enhancing observation and monitoring in basic schools, through the provision of additional work tools for School Support Officers (SSOs) and Education Secretaries. In alignment with these efforts, and following PLANE’s advocacy, the Universal Basic Education Board recently procured and distributed 41 tablets to SSOs, along with 4 additional tablets to Education Secretaries (ESs) in Gabasawa, Minjibir, Karaye, and Takai LGAs. This initiative strengthens the ability of SSOs to collect real-time data during school visits and provide valuable mentoring to teachers, ultimately contributing to the improvement of education quality in Kano State. #UKNGEducation #EducateEveryChild #PLANEProgramme UK in Nigeria DAI Joan Keaney-Bray Zehra Zaidi Abiola Sanusi Nguyan Shaku Feese Innocent Chukwu Jose AKPLOGAN musa Jimoh Federal Ministry Of Education, Nigeria FHI 360 Social Development Direct The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre Diana Agabi Florence Chawai Blessing Akaka Ian Attfield Mikailu Ibrahim Ben French Rasheed Adebesin Akeem Odewale Musbahu Sahabi MEAL DPro G. Integrated education programmes are a key way to support enrolment and retention of out of school children in non-formal and formal education programmes. The FCDO funded Save the Children International implemented FCDO-PLANE Nigeria Window 3 community education programme is an excellent example of this. Community groups and community based child protection committees work with households to promote and support out of school children aged 6-13 years to enrol and remain in education. This includes challenging negative social and gender norms around girls and children with disabilities accessing education. Village Savings Loans Associations are established within communities with social funds being used to purchase basic school supplies, and individual households also use the funds to support economic improvements. This has resulted in caregivers being able to financially support their children to successfully transition from Save the Children's non formal foundational learning clubs to formal primary school. These community based interventions leverage on existing structures and processes where possible to promote sustainability. These initiatives combined provide a holistic intervention that is and will continue to support out of school children to enrol and be retained in education throughout Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna States. Kaduna State is harnessing digital technology to revolutionise education, with strategic support from PLANE. The state has implemented innovative tools aimed at enhancing educational outcomes across its 700 public and 89 private schools, fostering data-driven decision-making and long-term growth. A key milestone in this initiative is the adoption of Survey-CTO, a digital platform that enables efficient data management and school monitoring. This tool has streamlined processes such as school mapping, tracking visits, conducting graded assessments, and guiding informed policy decisions. #UKNGEducation #EducateEveryChild #PLANEProgramme UK in Nigeria DAI Joan Keaney-Bray Zehra Zaidi Abiola Sanusi Nguyan Shaku Feese Innocent Chukwu Jose AKPLOGAN musa Jimoh Federal Ministry Of Education, Nigeria FHI 360 Social Development Direct The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre Diana Agabi Florence Chawai Blessing Akaka Ian Attfield Mikailu Ibrahim Ben French Rasheed Adebesin Akeem Odewale Musbahu Sahabi MEAL DPro G. In early education, when children are still developing their thinking skills, learning in their native language ensures they fully understand lessons, instructions, and tasks. This strengthens their ability to understand and retain information. The Foundational learning materials provided by the PLANE programme promotes the use of mother tongue in alignment with the National Language Policy, to aid learners in understanding concepts and instructions better. #UKNGEducation #EducateEveryChild #PLANEProgramme UK in Nigeria DAI Joan Keaney-Bray Zehra Zaidi Abiola Sanusi Nguyan Shaku Feese Innocent Chukwu Jose AKPLOGAN musa Jimoh Federal Ministry Of Education, Nigeria FHI 360 Social Development Direct The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre Diana Agabi Florence Chawai Blessing Akaka Ian Attfield Mikailu Ibrahim Ben French Rasheed Adebesin Akeem Odewale Musbahu Sahabi MEAL DPro G.
