This is fast becoming an unusual norm whenever I and my team go out to sensitize girls. Having to first set out the tone for them to feel comfortable about talking about their bodies and periods. We started by asking if they had started menstruating and even if more than half the hall had started their periods they had initially felt shy about talking about it to a fellow lady. What I can say for a fact that is open discussions about menstruation need to be a priority for young girls. We taught them about menstruation, their body's biological process, and how certain things are not normal for example, being too shy to speak about periods, and enduring various abnormalities due to fear and societal stigma. We are working to ensure they grow unhindered by life's biological processes, which can often lead to numerous medical issues that divert their time and attention from pursuing their dreams. Our mission is to empower them to overcome these obstacles and achieve their aspirations without being held back by period pains and other reproductive health challenges. I and my teammates had one-on-one counseling with several girls who had personal pressing needs. Menstruation shouldn’t be a topic to be stigmatized. Several copies of the Flow Freely book were given to the ladies and donated to their school libraries as well. As well as sanitary supplies. And that’s how we spent the International Day of the Girl Child empowering girls about their bodies.💚 Couldn’t be more thankful to Oluwabunmi Ajao and Tobiloba Karim for being such amazing teammates, working diligently on the Flow Freely project.
