Dear Empathy Partners, Once again, we find ourselves preparing to celebrate our children and we would like to take a moment to appreciate and celebrate you for your unwavering support. This year, our theme is "My Sibling and I," with a specific focus on siblings of children with disabilities. These remarkable children often make great sacrifices for their siblings, especially those from low-income families. Unfortunately, they frequently face challenges in terms of self-esteem and societal perceptions, which can also manifest within their own homes. It is important to recognize that these siblings are often the future caregivers of their special siblings, and if their emotional well-being is not properly managed, it can have drastic consequences that affect their siblings. Therefore, our inclusive children's party will center around celebrating and engaging in heart-to-heart conversations with them. My Sibling and I... Year after year, we choose a theme that embodies an inclusive world for children with disabilities and their caregivers. This year, our focus is on celebrating and supporting the siblings of children with disabilities. In our society, where the system does not adequately support individuals with special needs, family members, especially parents and siblings, play crucial roles. Unfortunately, most support organizations tend to overlook the siblings and instead prioritize the children with disabilities and their parents. As a result, these siblings often feel neglected and unloved, despite their powerful impact on the lives of their special needs siblings. Caring for these children can be financially demanding, further exacerbating the situation. The siblings of special needs individuals frequently experience low self-esteem, and in extreme cases, they may develop resentment towards their special sibling. This is concerning because ultimately, these siblings will become the future caregivers for their brothers or sisters with special needs. If they harbor negative emotions towards their siblings, the outcome will be unfortunate, especially when the parents are no longer able to provide care or have passed away. I have received reports of siblings searching for placement options for their special needs siblings because they are unsure how to care for them when the parents are no longer around, even for mild disabilities. There have also been instances of siblings causing intentional harm to their special needs siblings, stemming from a lack of understanding on how to help. This issue is not solely the responsibility of the siblings themselves; it concerns all of us. This year, we aim to celebrate these remarkable siblings of children with special needs and emphasize the importance of prioritizing their mental well-being. They should have the opportunity to live their own lives alongside caring for their siblings. We must teach them how to create a balance between self-care and caring for their special needs siblings.
