Congratulations to our portfolio company, alphabloQ (Techstars '22) on becoming Kenya's first web3 investments platform to get into Kenya's Capital Market Authorities Sandbox! 🚀 🚀 🚀 Alphabloq is a game-changing platform that leverages the power of blockchain technology and asset tokenization to democratize access to investing in Real World Assets, starting with real estate. With Alphabloq, anyone can purchase tokenized shares with as little as $100 Congrats to the founders Trevor Kimani, John Mbui, and the rest of the team! 👏
alphabloQ (Techstars '22) is leading the way in tokenizing financial assets in Africa, by becoming Kenya's first web3 investments platform to get into Kenya's Capital Market Authorities Sandbox! #Web3 and #tokenization have gained popularity among financial institutions who may be cautious on crypto assets, but are keen on the underlying #blockchain technology. E.g. Blackrock's CEO Larry Fink sees “the tokenization of every financial asset” as the next step in the technological revolution of the financial markets. So what is alphabloQ (Techstars '22)? alphabloQ simplifies investing in Real World Assets, starting with real estate, by breaking down the value of the asset into shares on the blockchain, popularly known as "tokens". In doing so, alphabloQ reduces the entry barriers to investing, so Africans can invest in real estate with as little as $100. "Our goal is simple: create a world where building wealth is a right, and no longer a privilege" says CEO, Trevor. Why blockchain? Well, although real estate is a highly sought after investment in Africa, the high cost, high friction transaction processes, and high rates of fraud deter many from investing. alphabloQ’s blockchain platform solves for this, allowing for investments with as little as $100. In the words of Larry Fink - “If you had a tokenized security … the moment you buy or sell an instrument, it’s known it’s on a general ledger that is all created together...This eliminates all corruption, having a tokenized system.“ alphabloQ CEO, Trevor Kimani, has over 10 years of fintech experience. CPTO John Mbui has over a decade of fintech and data science experience. "Keeping the regulator close has been a key priority for us to ensure we approach this fledgling industry in a manner that builds trust and protects consumers. The web3 industry has been struggling to gain regulatory support and clarity, creating a huge risk for any young start up working in a heavily regulated industry such as capital markets." - CEO, Trevor Kimani. alphabloQ’s entry into the Kenya Capital Market Authorities Sandbox not only solidifies their position as a pioneer in tokenized investments in Africa, but is a noteworthy advancement for Africa’s web3 ecosystem at large. alphabloQ was one of the 12 startups selected for the inaugural ARM Labs Lagos Techstars Accelerator cohort in 2022. “Doing nothing keeps Africa in darkness. “Rana” means sun in Hausa - our ecosystem creates a brighter future where energy is no longer a privilege but an essential service accessible to those who need it most.” - Abraham Mohammed, CEO of Rana Energy (Techstars ‘23). Africa’s energy crisis is not news. Almost half of Africa is without grid access. In Nigeria, 85% of businesses rely on economically unsustainable fuel backup generators. Poor energy access costs Africa’s economy $48bn annually in lost GDP. To make matters worse, the cost of backup power has surged 6x since the pandemic, meaning many African businesses pay up to double what the average US business pays. Across Africa, there are many incredible entrepreneurs tackling different parts of the problem, across manufacturing energy systems, energy system installation, and energy financing. But with Africa needing to double its energy capacity by 2030 to meet its SDG goals, and fivefold by 2050, Rana believes that a data-driven approach that integrates these multiple solutions is needed. Rana’s energy-as-a-service ecosystem bridges the energy finance gap for SMEs in critical sectors (hospitals, schools, agriculture). By collaborating with the likes of the National Defence College (Nigeria’s highest military institution) & AWS, they are able to digitally map out the energy needs of critical institutions, enabling financiers to identify bankable opportunities, and installers (including themselves) to fulfil that demand. Rana’s data-driven, collaborative approach to solving the energy crisis enables all key players (critical sectors SMEs, solar manufacturers, installers, and financiers) to thrive. Rana was co-founded by engineers Abraham Mohammed (CEO) and Mubarak Popoola (CTO), who’s combined experience spans energy, technology and manufacturing. Collectively they have deployed over 500MW of renewable energy, equivalent to 10% of Nigeria’s grid. In just 7 months since Rana’s launch, they have connected 1MW of energy needs equivalent to 100 critical institutions, built a 20MW database of energy needs including ARM's own farm! Rana has received strong institutional support with key partnerships and interests from The Infrastructure Bank, Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority and ARM. Congrats to team Rana Energy, for recently graduating from the ARM Labs Lagos Techstars Accelerator!
