Honored to have been invited to speak at the World Urban Forum (WUF 12) and share insights on the critical role of NPOs in influencing policy change and driving toward circularity in Africa #ACENfoundation Engaging with fellow experts and organizations dedicated to sustainable urbanization and circular economy principles was inspiring. Together, we can work towards projects where nature is integrated into the economy rather than the other way round. Throughout the session, insights were shared on how the #privatesector and foundations can work effectively with local authorities, UN agencies, and financing institutions to tackle urbanization's multifaceted challenges. As we continue our day 3, sharing reflections on engagements of day 2 at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt . As we rapidly urbanize, Dr. Sara Elsaid from ACEN Foundation highlighted that #circulareconomy is our path to a #resilient, #sustainable future. In the #building and #construction sector, we have a unique opportunity to redefine value by maximizing the use of our resources and ensure we are adopting #sharedmodels not just for car share as an example, but across the industry to ensure extended utilization of #assets and #products. Instead of tearing down structures, we can breathe new life into them—#repurposing, #reinventing, #reimagining. This approach needs to extend beyond projects; it’s about building relationships within #communities, creating spaces that grow with the people who inhabit them. Marta Dutschmann Gomes mentioned it’s about harnessing the power of #connection, proving that the legacy of a structure can be more than its bricks and beams. But to achieve this vision, we must foster an enabling environment where #finance and #urbanplanning work hand in hand. #Regulations that align with our ambitions are essential, to support the #socialinfrastructure our #communities need and deserve. Resonating with Raffaela Schmuck that we need to shift our focus, prioritize people before projects, understand that a city thrives when it meets the demands of all residents—not with temporary solutions, but with long-term #visioning and aligned #investments that generate #social and #economicgrowth - and inspire a lasting legacy in return. As Prince Faisal bin Ayyaf فيصل بن عياف said, when we prioritize urban plans that respect our #architecturalidentity, value #humanconnections, and promote community involvement, we aren’t just building #cities—we’re building #futures, shared experiences as Anacláudia Rossbach said, and a foundation for the generations to come. Global resource use far exceeds what is required to meet human needs for all and achieve the SDGs. The new Global Resources Outlook 2024 projects an average annual growth of 2.3%, leading to a significant 60% increase by 2060 compared to 2020. 🛣️🌱The report provides solutions for ‘provisioning systems’, incentivizing cross-sector innovations. These changes across the most resource- intensive systems can improve well-being for all within planetary boundaries. The key drivers of rising material demand are built environment and mobility, followed by food and energy systems, accounting for 90% of global material demand. 📊 See the graphic below for strategies for reducing resource use across these four provisioning systems.
