• Glad to see our pilot battery in Delft serving as the backdrop for another debate on competitiveness—the #scaleup challenge faced by clean tech startups in the Netherlands. Watch Jacob Ruiter’s take on the (missing) industrial policy and how the Dutch energy transition and broader economy could benefit from innovative businesses like AQUABATTERY. 📺 Nieuwsuur segment: https://lnkd.in/eyAC86Z8 🔎 A European perspective on this debate: https://lnkd.in/ekPCtduH

  • "Without long-lasting and widely available storage, Europe will struggle to resolve its energy price conundrum." Thank you, Victor J. of POLITICO Europe for beating the drum for energy storage. Batteries are key to curbing the waste of clean energy and lowering electricity costs for both industry and consumers in Europe. Without urgent action, the continent’s renewable energy and climate targets are at risk. But the stakes are even higher—energy storage is now central to energy security and the prosperity of European citizens. Yet, much remains to be done for Europe to call this decade an energy storage success. Widespread energy storage deployment—including novel #LDES— require a clear strategy, the removal of market barriers and double taxation, faster permitting, and strong regulatory support for new technologies. Will the new Clean Industrial Deal address these challenges? We’ll take a closer look next. ⚠️Cleantech Reality Check: Is Europe’s electrification revolution failing to materialise? ⚠️ We’re excited to announce our latest Cleantech Reality Check, developed in partnership with Breakthrough Energy and featuring analyses by Systemiq Ltd. The report provides European policymakers real-time insights illuminating the barriers hampering the EU’s electrification revolution, and the tools to bridge the gap between ambitious goals and ground-level realities.   Read the Executive Summary below or access the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gfVtVA7J   It’s clear from the data that Europe’s much needed drive towards electrification is so far falling short. Despite ambitious rhetoric, electricity demand has stagnated at 22% of final energy demand since 2010—well below the EU's target of 37-40% by 2030.  This Cleantech Reality Check zooms in on three pivotal technologies with the potential to drive electrification across the continent: Long Duration Energy Storage (#LDES), industrial heat electrification, and electricity grid extension and modernisation. By examining the progress and challenges associated with these technologies, we reveal that without immediate, coordinated action to accelerate their offtake and deployment, Europe's clean energy transition and its broader climate goals are at significant risk. Key takeaways from the report include: ⚡ A rapid deployment of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is needed to reach the EU's 2030 renewable energy goals. Less than 1 GW of novel LDES technology operational and 3.7 GW under development out of an additional 65 GW required by 2030.  📈 The current annual investment into grid buildout and modernisation needs to double to meet the EU’s energy transition power needs. Today, 10.8 million kilometers of the 17.8 million kilometers required have been built.  ♨️ Industrial heat represented 10-15% of the EU's final energy demand in 2020 but only 100 TWh of that industrial heat is currently electrified, less than a quarter of what is needed to reach EU’s targets. It’s clear that Europe needs a jolt of electricity demand if it wants the promised clean industrial deal to succeed. Let’s work together to ensure Europe’s clean industrial deal delivers on its promise. 📃 Explore the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gfVtVA7J Ann Mettler Julia ReinaudAlberto Toril Castro Alison Menon Laetitia de Villepin Abindra P. • 3️⃣..2️⃣..1️⃣.. our pilot battery is LIVE ⚡ Yesterday the battery site at the Deltares campus was high on..energy! After a year-long sprint and months of detailed planning and installation, the AQUABATTERY team finally connected the power cables 🔌 The result: a safe and sustainable #longdurationenergystorage designed for 50kWh, which will generate actionable insights into technology scalability, operations and maintainance, and LDES uses cases (among others) within the coming 12 months. In his opening speech, Jiajun Cen, PhD, CEO of AQUABATTERY, highlighted three success factors to keep scaling acid-base flow batteries. First, the global #urgency for #EnergyStorage, illustrated by the COP29's #1500GW target. Second, the #collaborative approach we have taken to maximise the value for our pilot partners and for our own commercial strategy. In climate tech, you must "move fast and fix things - together.” Lastly, the tireless work of our #Ateam, who believes in the company's vision, shares our values for sustainable innovation and not afraid of the bumps on the road ahead. Speaking from an investor's perspective, Rinke Zonneveld, CEO of Invest-NL, talked about the essential role of LDES to the Dutch energy transition. But he reminded us that that's not the full picture. He also emphasized that LDES and sustainable innovation is the guarantee for larger #economicsecurity and companies like us illustrate the intersection of #climatepolicy, innovation policy and European #competitiveness. The task for investors, innovators, strategic partners and policy-makers is to make this mission succeed. Thank you for our partners, investors and everyone to attend the launch event.
