The urgent need to address climate change and accelerate the clean #energy transition requires the rapid, sustained deployment of #renewable sources like wind and solar. But what happens to the energy transition when the wind doesn’t blow, or the sun doesn’t shine? The good news? The solution is already here: long duration energy storage. #LDES acts as the conductor of a clean energy orchestra, ensuring that energy sources collaborate to create a balanced, reliable, and resilient energy grid in perfect harmony.

Australia's New South Wales (NSW) Government has reaffirmed the 8-hour minimum duration for long duration energy storage projects in its Long Duration Storage Review: Position Paper. Supported by the LDES Council, this standard ensures policy certainty by addressing the substantial capital #investment and long lead times required for #LDES projects. Retaining the 8-hour definition strengthens the state’s renewable energy goals, complements the existing target of 2GW at 16GWh by 2030, and provides a clear investment pathway for transitioning from coal-fired power generation ahead of scheduled closures by 2038. As the state advances its climate goals, the NSW Government intends to legislate a new long duration energy storage target of 28GWh by 2034. “This additional target will provide a clear signal for investors and demonstrates that New South Wales is committed to supporting more long duration storage over the long term,” said Penny Sharpe, NSW State Energy Minister. “We know many of these projects are complex and have long lead times. We’re committed to supporting this important sector—we’re in it for the long haul.” LDES technologies are a vital part of the state’s energy system, ensuring #renewable electricity is available during peak demand, supporting local economic growth, and contributing to global efforts for a #sustainable and resilient energy future. Anchor member Ørsted and U.S. utility Salt River Project have begun operations of their 600 MW combined #solar and #battery storage project in Pinal County, Arizona. Located south of Phoenix, the Eleven Mile Solar Center represents a $1 billion investment by Ørsted in #clean energy for the state. The facility has the capacity to store up to 1,200 MWh of power, enough to supply #renewable energy to 65,000 U.S. homes. The centre will provide power to businesses, residences and Meta’s planned data centre in Mesa, Arizona. Meta signed a power purchase agreement last year to secure the majority of the power generated from the project. “Arizona has one of the highest growth rates of electricity in the country due to the surge in data centres and the reshoring of American manufacturing. With our first project in Arizona now complete, we’re excited to help meet the growing demand of the state and region with reliable, domestic energy,” said David Hardy, Ørsted Americas CEO. The #Time4Action is now to ensure #3xRenewables by 2030. To learn more, click below:

Director of Policy and Partnerships Alex Campbell joined Sam Morgan on the The Jolt to discuss how new policy could boost the British #energy storage sector. “We need long duration energy storage because, as we all know, we’re deploying more and more renewables, which means more and more variability in the supply of our electricity. So we need to store energy for longer to keep the lights on, provide energy security and to decarbonise,” said Campbell. To listen to the full interview, click here: https://bit.ly/3BMnwMw

The UK Government has published its response to its consultation on Designing a policy framework to enable investment in long duration electricity storage. The response confirms that the UK will proceed with a “Cap and Floor” mechanism for #LDES in Great Britain, that the mechanism will have two “tracks” for more and less mature technology respectively, and that the scheme will be administered by the #energy regulator Ofgem. The scheme will not have a defined target but will set an indicative range for each round. Applications for the first round of contracts are expected in 2025. Commenting on the publication, Director of Policy and Partnerships Alex Campbell said, “The LDES Council welcomes the UK’s confirmation that it will introduce a Cap and Floor mechanism to support LDES in Great Britain. LDES will play a vital role in helping the new British government deliver its ambitious net zero targets for 2030 and beyond. We look forward to working with the government and stakeholders as the final details are realised and the application process begins.” The #Time4Action is now to ensure #3xRenewables by 2030. Member Form Energy has raised $405 million, bringing its total funding to over $1.2 billion to accelerate the manufacturing of its 100-hour iron-air batteries at its Weirton, West Virginia facility. The company has completed construction of the 550,000-square-foot Form Factory 1 and has initiated trial production of its iron-air batteries. By 2028, the facility is expected to exceed 1 million square feet, with an annual production capacity of 500 megawatts of #energy storage annually. Using iron, water, and air, Form Energy’s iron-air #batteries leverage #LDES technologies to enhance grid reliability, and secure #clean energy access. “We are excited to continue proving that American manufacturing for innovative energy technology is alive and well, right here in the industrial heartland of West Virginia and the Ohio River Valley.” said Mateo Jaramillo, CEO of Form Energy. Form Energy has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GE Vernova to explore strategic collaborations, supporting the commercial #deployment of its iron-air battery systems. Stanwell Corporation Limited aims to purchase 1,010MWh of stored energy through anchor member Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners' Supernode battery energy storage system project in Queensland, Australia. Stanwell, a power company owned by the #Queensland government, seeks to secure a 15-year agreement with Quinbrook to cover the entire capacity of Stage 3 of the Supernode project. Quinbrook’s Supernode combines a low-carbon data centre complex powered by locally generated #renewable energy with large-scale battery energy storage systems. Situated within the central node of Queensland's electricity network, where an estimated 80% of the state's traded electricity flows daily, the project is planned to encompass 750 MW across three stages, with Quinbrook indicating that output could expand to 2,000 MW. As part of Stanwell’s strategy to integrate 5 GWh of #energy storage into its resource mix, the company has acquired a 4GWh pumped #hydro energy storage development and is negotiating a long-term deal for just over 1GWh of #battery storage. These investments aim to align with Queensland’s #renewable energy targets, including achieving 70% renewable energy by 2032. The #Time4Action is now to ensure #3xRenewables by 2030.
