In #clinicalresearch, #NIRS is often used to assess muscle/brain oxygenation, particularly in cardiovascular & neurological studies. Simultaneous brain & muscle measurements are promising in providing valuable insights into therapy effectiveness & rehabilitation strategies 🟡 Anirban Dutta et al. explored neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) as a therapy for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Using NIRS on the calf muscle and the prefrontal cortex during tiptoe exercises, they found that increased tiptoe frequency and NMES intensity decreased muscle oxygenation but increased prefrontal neural activity, suggesting the feasibility of this combined approach for CVI patients. 🔵 Machfer et al. investigated the link between neuromuscular fatigue and oxygenation in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Using the OxyMon on the vastus lateralis and prefrontal cortex during exercise, they found that while muscle oxygenation didn't differ significantly, brain and muscle tHb & HHb were blunted in ESRD patients. Cerebral tHb also correlated with exercise endurance, indicating cerebral hypoperfusion may contribute to reduced exercise capacity in these patients. #fNIRS #neuromuscular #NMES #CVI

  • #Hypoxia occurs when the oxygen demand of a tissue exceeds its supply. Hence, understanding the body's physiological and coping mechanisms in hypoxic conditions is crucial. NIRS, which measures local tissue oxygenation, has been effectively used in hypoxia and altitude research for many years. Recent studies increasingly use #NIRS to measure brain and muscle oxygenation simultaneously during hypoxia, particularly during exercise, as hypoxia affects oxygen supply differently across tissues: 🟡 Rupp et al. compared normobaric hypoxia (NH) and hypobaric hypoxia (HH) during aerobic exercise using the OxyMon. They found that HH impaired performance and pacing more than NH due to differences in systemic alterations and cerebral oxygenation, requiring higher adaptive costs to maintain cerebral oxygen delivery. 🔵 Rosales et al. also used the OxyMon to assess acute normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia. They found that muscle oxygenation remained stable, but brain oxygenation decreased at high altitudes, suggesting environmental dependency on cardiac compensation and the need for caution when comparing different hypoxic conditions. 🟡 Baur et al. investigated the effects of load carriage in normoxia and hypoxia on hemodynamics, tissue oxygenation, and metabolism. Using OctaMon and PortaMon, they found that load carriage, especially in hypoxia, reduced cardiorespiratory efficiency and increased strain, potentially raising the risk of altitude sickness. #fNIRS #altitudesickness #hypoxiccondition #hemodynamics #altitude

  • The power of exercise on cognitive health in seniors with type 2 diabetes. In their study, Zhao et al. evaluated the impact of a specialized exercise program on elderly individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and cognitive impairments. The research team used fNIRS to measure changes in prefrontal brain activity before and after the training period. Participants in the intervention group exhibited promising improvements compared to the control group, highlighting the potential of targeted physical activity to boost both cognitive function and overall brain health. 🌐Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/g99gwjh5 🟡 Stay tuned for more insights on the benefits of using NIRS for neuro and/or sport research #fNIRS #BrainHealth #ExerciseScience

  • NIRS initially found its applications in sports science for monitoring local muscle oxygen consumption. Recently, #fNIRS has been increasingly used in Sports and Exercise Science to measure brain activity, providing insights into cognitive state, decision-making, and motor activity during exercise. It is primarily applied to the prefrontal and motor cortex. Simultaneously measuring muscle and brain oxygenation during exercise can offer a comprehensive view of systemic oxygenation, compare neural and muscular oxygen status, and evaluate training strategies. 🔗https://lnkd.in/gf65_cyH 🟡 Zadeh et al. studied simultaneous neural and muscular oxygenation during progressive exercise, measuring with PortaLite on the prefrontal cortex and PortaMon on the vastus lateralis. Results showed a decrease in Hb-diff (difference between O2Hb & HHb) in the vastus lateralis after reaching the anaerobic threshold (AT) and an increase in the prefrontal cortex, indicating effective cerebral autoregulation despite metabolic fatigue. 🔵 Cherouveim et al. examined the effects of muscle blood flow restriction on cerebral hemodynamics and exercise performance. Measuring prefrontal brain activity and muscle oxygenation on the vastus lateralis during maximal incremental exercise, they found that muscle oxygenation and performance decreased significantly without blood flow restriction (NC) compared to with restriction (WC). Additionally, brain oxygenation was lower at maximum effort in the WC condition compared to the NC condition. #sportsscience #exercisescience

Can large-scale, multimodal hyperscanning experiments be carried out in the real world? Under the EFRO funded ALERT project, ANT Neuro had the opportunity to collaborate with industry and University partners to explore effects of inter brain synchrony in a classroom of #20 students during interactive and passive learning blocks. This pioneering attempt to measure EEG and fNIRS simultaneously in a meaningful setting was made possible by multiple industry leaders and research partners working together. The promising results offer insights to enhance operational safety and performance factors in any classroom or collaborative setting. Ever wondered why at SPARKD we talk about Dual Task/Cognitive Motor Training instead of pure brain training games and apps? Many studies show how Dual Task and Cognitive Motor Training activate the brain more than doing single physical tasks or cognitive tasks only but, at SPARKD, we test it on real people. This test was conducted in collaboration with Assistant Professor of Motor Neuroscience Wei-Peng Teo 张伟鹏 from the Science of Learning Education Centre (SoLEC) and the National Institute of Education, Singapore. Our participant is balancing on a 60uP® balance board while doing a NeuroTracker test and changes in his brain oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin reflecting his brain activity in the pre-frontal cortex are being measured by fNRIS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) by Artinis Medical Systems. As represented very clearly below, there is more brain activation (indicated by the redness) when the participant is Dual Tasking, doing Cognitive Motor Training as compared to when doing a brain activity or a physical task only. Stay tuned for more experiments coming up in the next few weeks looking at EEG as well as fNRIS at SPARKD 🧠 #neuroscience #dualtask #cognitivemotortraining #brainbody #balance #coordination #stability #longevityexercise
