In the latest episode of our Energy Voices podcast, Domenico De Luca, Head of Trading & Sales at #Axpo, discusses his lifelong fascination with #energymarkets⚡, unpicks their complexities, and explains why trading and sales play such a crucial role for Axpo and its customers. Energy trading combines everything from mathematics, technology 🛠️, economics 💼 and engineering, to meteorology and geopolitics 🌍, Domenico explains. On any given day, external factors such as weather, world events reported in the news and politics can have a significant impact on market movements and strategic trading decisions. As an active participant, Axpo draws on its extensive knowledge, experience and expertise to gain an in-depth understanding of market movements and advises clients on how best to manage their energy needs. 🌐 Domenico is a great believer in the integrated European electricity market and thinks this has proven to be unique and resilient, especially in times of crisis. A success story from which Switzerland and Axpo benefit, over the past 10 years the trading and sales division has accounted for approximately 50% of the company's financial results. But for Domenico De Luca it’s about more than just numbers. For him, energy trading is a vital factor in ensuring that the energy supply of the future is affordable, climate-neutral, and secure.

🔥 What’s heating up in the #EnergyMarkets?   July brought up the heat — literally and figuratively. As Southeast Europe sizzled under high temperatures 🌡️, cooling demands skyrocketed, driving #power prices to new heights ⚡. But that’s just part of the story:   ➡️ High temperatures in northeast Asia boosted energy demand and, in turn, coal prices due to China's pivotal role in global coal markets ⛏️. ➡️ European #LNG supply remains stable but poses a bullish risk due to high import dependence. ➡️ Strong French #nuclear production, along with robust hydropower output in Switzerland and the Nordics, provided upward system flexibility and prevented further price increases. ⚛   Read the key insights by Andy Sommer, Head of Fundamental #Analysis, #Modelling & #Meteorology, and his team in the August edition of the European Energy Markets Monthly.   #Axpoanalysis: https://lnkd.in/er-EuY4A   #energyanalysis #electricitymarkets #marketanalysis

Extreme weather events and politics remain strong drivers of the electricity market. This is what Andy Sommer, Head of Fundamental #Analysis, #Modelling & #Meteorology, and his team write in the July edition of the European Energy Markets Monthly. Other key highlights: 🌦 Swiss hydropower surged due to high precipitation, but export restrictions put downward pressure on Swiss prices. 📈 EPEX Spot power cut on June 25 led to market decoupling and high electricity prices in Germany. The spot price soared to 492 EUR/MWh. ⚛ High French #nuclear production increased exports but raised domestic prices. 🔥 Gas markets saw an uptrend due to tight LNG supply and maintenance 📉 Coal prices dropped amid to low Chinese demand. Same for Carbon: Following EU and French election prices decreased. 🔗 Read the #Axpoanalysis: https://lnkd.in/e2m_JeNh #energyanalysis #electricitymarkets #marketanalysis #Axpo

🌍 Celebrating #Connection at Axpo's Pan-European Mid Office Days in Amsterdam! Last month, we had the incredible opportunity to bring together our European Middle Office team from various Axpo Group offices across the continent for two days of connection and collaboration. ☔ Despite the typical wet Amsterdam weather, the event was a resounding success! "My biggest take-away from the Days is the opportunity to meet everyone in person and build meaningful connections with colleagues I had only interacted with virtually. It was really useful to get to know our internal clients better and understand the challenges they are facing," says Mónica Navas Mimiaga, Data Analyst from Axpo Iberia. 🤝 From insightful workshops to engaging #teambuilding activities, the day was packed with moments that strengthened both our personal and professional bonds. Taking a step away from every day business was invaluable. It encouraged a more strategic perspective and has equipped us to serve our clients even better. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making these days memorable. Looking forward to more #opportunities to connect and grow together! #midofficeday #amsterdam #collaboration #teamwork

#MeetOurTeam - Bart Janssen, Gas Portfolio Manager   🎯 Which area do you focus on at Axpo?  As Gas Portfolio Manager NL, I am responsible for all #Axpo gas activities in the Netherlands. I price and hedge customers’ products and also make sure that Axpo prudently exercises its responsibilities for balancing gas in the Netherlands. Working with my colleagues, we make sure that Axpo offers attractive products for our gas customers in the Netherlands.   💻 What does your typical day look like? In my role, I closely follow the gas market from my desk, discussing the latest trends, developments and new products with colleagues. As Axpo Group is a European energy company with a presence across the continent and beyond, a lot of meetings take place virtually. But while I spend a lot of time behind my desk, I try to compensate with a good walk during my lunch break!   🔎 What interesting trends are you seeing? The decline in domestic European gas production and halt to Russian gas imports has led to a significant increase in price volatility on the gas market, with no sign of this decreasing any time soon. Managing such volatility in our gas portfolio requires the development of new tools and products to mitigate risk for our customers.   Axpo is not only a purchaser of gas but also has responsibility for matching the demand and supply for our customers as closely as possible to prevent any imbalance. It’s a key responsibility and means we’re always working to offer attractive and innovative products for our customers.   ⛷ How do you relax after work? After work I enjoy taking part in sports: anything from biking to skiing. Not only is the exercise good for me after a day behind my desk, but I’ve even been known to come up with some good ideas for attractive new products to help our clients! My brain never stops. 😅

Special thanks go to all our clients. Together, we worked closely to complete the power purchase agreements (#PPAs) which make such a key contribution to realising new renewable energy projects across Europe. This prestigious award further demonstrates Axpo’s dedication to #sustainability and #innovation. 🌱⚡️ Standout moments include: 🚀 Completing the first-ever PPAs in Greece, Croatia, and Slovenia. 💡 Enabling the rapid development of projects in regions with illiquid power markets, by providing essential funding. 🌞 Signing groundbreaking PPAs and generating substantial green electricity and significantly reducing CO2 #emissions. "I’d like to thank everyone who made these long-term PPAs possible. They have revolutionised the development of renewable plants, especially where markets are not yet mature, and given companies across Europe the opportunity to buy #green power, some for the very first time. I’m particularly proud that so many of the solutions we develop demonstrate the creativity of our hard-working teams." said Domenico Franceschino, Axpo’s Head of Origination West & East Europe. 🔗 Read the full interview https://lnkd.in/eS3f4Xdy Working together with our clients and partners, Axpo takes an innovative approach to tackling the complexity of the market, supporting our partners and clients in achieving their #sustainability goals while effectively managing risk. 🌟 Thanks to all the #Axpo team, our partners and clients, and everyone who supports the journey to a greener future. 🍅 🥒 🥕 Growing business: helping French greenhouse farmers. Dependent on government support for their energy needs, greenhouse farmers in France have struggled to maintain profitability and plan their future activities. As subsidies for cogeneration are gradually set to be phased out by 2030, Axpo France has stepped in to offer long-term fixed-price energy contracts that secure the farmers’ future by hedging against volatile markets. In a nutshell 👇🏼 1️⃣ Running a greenhouse is an expensive endeavour, requiring around 400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of heat for each cubic meter. 2️⃣ Since 2020, #natgas prices, ranging from €30 to €150 per megawatt-hour, have significantly impacted farmers' production costs. This caused energy costs to vary from as low as €0.7 to as high as €3.5 per kilogram. 3️⃣ #Axpo enabled farmers to lock in fixed energy prices for periods ranging from 5 to 10 years. We offered an innovative way to secure prices for both the gas they consume and the electricity they produce with cogeneration. 4️⃣ "Partnering with Axpo has transformed our operations. Thanks to fixed energy prices, we can plan our production without the fear of volatility" said Anne Claire GOYER from Le Potager de Jade. 5️⃣ Our strategic focus on risk management is transforming agricultural energy management for French greenhouse farmers. Axpo is softening the economic impact of the gradual phase-out of subsidies and promoting greater long-term financial stability and independence. 🔗 Read the story of this innovative partnership: https://lnkd.in/e-YrUKUh 📸 Emeline Boileau 📷, YDEAL.

Unusual weather patterns ➕ significant geopolitical factors ➡ substantial increase in energy commodity prices and heightened volatility. This is what Andy Sommer, Head of Fundamental #Analysis, #Modelling & #Meteorology, and his team write in the June edition of the European Energy Markets Monthly. Other key highlights: 🌦 Central Europe experienced exceptionally wet weather and temperatures close to seasonal norms, while Great Britain and the Nordics faced unusually warm conditions. 📉 Germany experienced negative power prices during noon hours due to solar overproduction, highlighting the increasing frequency of such volatile price events as renewable power capacity continues to expand. ⚛ French hashtag #nuclear production remained robust, flexibly ramping down during periods of low demand. 🔥 In the gas market, below-average injections and concerns about the sufficiency of winter storage drove prices higher 📈 Coal imports to Asia have risen significantly to meet increased cooling demand and replenish stockpiles. 🔗 Read the #AxpoAnalysis: https://lnkd.in/eJ62uFMb #energyanalysis #electricitymarkets #marketanalysis #Axpo
