Last week, our team visited Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam to explore the exhibition “Memory of the Designed Landscape”, which highlights the importance of archival care in preserving landscape design heritage. We are honored to have our archive featured in the exhibition as one of four case studies. We also had the opportunity to visit the HNI archive itself, where we saw unique drawings of iconic landscape projects - capturing not just final designs but also the creative steps behind them. In Haarlem’s Kleverpark neighborhood, the historic craft school has been transformed into De Meester, a unique residential complex. The project combines the restoration of the stately historic building with contemporary architecture and landscape design, creating a distinctive place to live. Central to De Meester’s design are its three interconnected outdoor spaces: the forecourt, the inner courtyard, and the garden zone. Each space balances its own identity while forming a cohesive whole. The forecourt, with its symmetrical layout, mature trees, and set of benches, serves as a welcoming communal garden. The intimate inner courtyard, situated above the parking structure, features gentle topography, diverse planting, multi-stem trees and private terraces, creating a peaceful setting for more personal use. Urban plan for Nieuw Legmeer got approved! Since 2021, Bureau B+B has collaborated closely with the Gemeente Amstelveen on the urban plan, landscape and public space framework, and image quality plan for the Nieuw Legmeer urban district. This new 'working and living' neighborhood will combine housing and businesses, offering a diverse mix of housing, education, social services, and public spaces to redefine urban living in Amstelveen. Designed to be energy-neutral, car-free at its core, and prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists, Nieuw Legmeer will feature green parks, ecological corridors, and mobility hubs. The district will be developed step by step, integrating existing and new businesses, and will ultimately include 4400 homes and approximately 30,000 m² of floor space dedicated to business activities. We’re proud to share that De Laat was one of 18 projects showcased at the Blauwe Kamer event last Saturday, celebrating the launch of the Yearbook Landscape Architecture and Urban Design in the Netherlands 2024. From 2020 to 2023, Bureau B+B worked on the redesign of De Laat as part of a strategy to green the historic inner-city center of Alkmaar. The street used to suffer from vacancy and low quality of public space. It has also been poorly equipped to cope with the changing climate: extensive paving led to heat stress on hot days, and heavy rainfall in 2021 caused significant flooding. The aim of the redevelopment was to create a sustainable, healthy, and livable city center that is climate-adaptive and responsive to evolving urban and retail landscapes. Today, De Laat has transformed into a lush, green corridor: reducing heat stress, enhancing water management, and fostering biodiversity within the city. The redevelopment of the Haamstede town center is in full swing! Bureau B+B has created the final design for the public space on behalf of Gemeente Schouwen-Duiveland. The plan focuses on adding more greenery, creating inviting spaces, and providing more room for pedestrians and cyclists—meeting the needs of both residents and visitors. This redevelopment is part of the Village Vision and Urban Development Plan for Burgh-Haamstede. The project will be completed by spring 2025. Vision Hofkwartier Zwolle accepted! Zwolle takes an important step towards a greener and more accessible city center by approving the vision for the South-western quarter of the old town. The vision rephrases the area as the ‘Hofkwartier’ by ultimately putting forward the original qualities of the historical court (Hof) that shaped the identity of this part of the city throughout history. The plan underlines and strengthens the ambitions for the city center that were established in the development program ‘Ons Stadshart van Morgen’ that Bureau B+B contributed to in 2022; strengthening the economic and cultural position of Zwolle by creating a more green, attractive and future-proof city center for both its residents and visitors. We are looking forward to the first milestone development following the vision ‘Hofkwartier’ will be the redesign of Ossenmarkt surrounding the Peperbus tower.
