The Netherlands is at the forefront of efficiently storing surplus sustainable energy in batteries. InnovationQuarter supports entrepreneurs who contribute to this growing battery ecosystem. Three pioneers share their innovations, ambitions, and their role in the energy transition:
🔋 Phoenix Metals: Industrial Waste as Raw Material for Batteries CEO Gijsbert W. Bakker has always been interested in the circular economy. “I believe engineers have an ethical responsibility to make their products circular and to combat overconsumption.” And that’s exactly what his company, Phoenix Metals, does. “We don’t import vanadium for flow batteries from, for example, China, but instead recover this raw material from residual and waste streams in the Netherlands.”
🔋 CarbonX: Solution for Graphite Shortage in Battery Production Rutger Van Raalten, co-founder of CarbonX and inventor of an innovative carbon anode material, says: “As a startup, you're not always taken seriously. But thanks to InnovationQuarter, we were quickly able to compete with the big players.”
🔋 Kalpana Systems: Ultra-Thin Layers for Super-Efficient Batteries Diederick Spee, CEO of Kalpana Systems: “We enable the rapid and cost-effective production of high-efficiency energy solutions, such as batteries, through Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition. The technology is applicable and scalable across various industries, such as solar panels, beverage, and food packaging.”
InnovationQuarter immediately recognized the potential: “They were the first independent party to have confidence in us and were willing to take action. It was a bold step for an investor.” And the collaboration with InnovationQuarter has been successful not just financially. “They are incredibly proactive and understand the playing field here in South Holland and beyond. Their network is extensive, and we are grateful to make use of it.”
