Join our green revolution: we turn CO₂ into circular chemicals.

About us

At PHOTANOL, we turn our world's CO₂ problem into a solution: our technology uses CO₂ as feedstock to produce renewable chemicals while leaving fossil resources in the ground. Our chemicals can be used to create a large variety of circular products, such as plastics, detergents, beauty and healthcare products, or even biofuels. Join our green revolution and transform the chemical industry to circular with us!

As part of the MOOI scheme, the consortium joins forces to establish the complete value chain for a circular production process for (1) sugars as feedstock for (bio)plastics and (2) protein for food. The process relies on CO₂ as the sole carbon source and cyanobacteria as the producing organisms.      𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗲:   EEW Energy from Waste GmbH: As a leading company in the generation of heat and power through thermal waste utilization, EEW provides its CO₂ for the process.      Photanol: A leading cyanobacteria-based CO₂ conversion company, Photanol develops cyanobacteria that convert the CO₂ into sugars and protein.       Wageningen University & Research (WUR): World-class University specializing in life sciences develops the fractioning process of the bacterial cells to sugars and protein.        Corbion: The global market leader in lactic acid and -derivatives, uses the sugar to produce precursors for PLA, a bio-based and biodegradable low-carbon footprint polymer.   revyve: Top-notch developer of animal-free ingredients, revyve will refine the cyanobacteria into functional ingredients and perform product development.    MOOI is an abbreviation for Missiegedreven Onderzoek, Ontwikkeling en Innovatie (Mission-driven Research, Development, and Innovation). It is a funding initiative by Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (Netherlands Enterprise Agency), short RVO. This initiative supports collaborative projects that aim at establishing innovative solutions that contribute to national climate goals.       On the picture are representatives of the consortium partners that joined the kick-off meeting in Amsterdam. 👨🔬 🤝 👨💼 "Believing you can change an industry all on your own is a fallacy. You need to partner with other companies to reach a greater goal together, especially with disruptive technologies like this one." 🚨 The plastics sector contributes to roughly 4% of global Greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions, relying heavily on the extraction and processing of fossil fuels like crude oil and natural gas. Looking at it in terms of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), 90% of GhG in the global plastics sector occur during the production stage. bioCircular innovation in this sector is focused on identifying more sustainable sourcing methods, like using a raw material that exists in excess in our atmosphere: Carbon Dioxide (CO2)! In episode 5 I had the pleasure of hosting the dynamic duo Joppe Verbokkem, Director of Finance and Business Development at Photanol and Paul v. Kirchbach, Director of Global Business Development at RENOLIT Healthcare Solutions. Apart from talking about the innovative technology based on using algae (cyanobacteria) to convert CO2 into circular chemicals, we focused on the topic of partnerships between start-ups and established industry players. Other topics we discussed include: 🔄 How the results of the recent EU elections might affect the bioCircular economy 🔄 Why the term "decarbonisation" is being used in a misleading way outside of the energy sector and why the more accurate term is "de-fossilization" 🔄 What a partnership between a start-up and established family-owned company can look like (and why it's not a walk in the park) 🔄 Why the main hurdle to market acceptance often lies in a very simple phenomenon: belief 🔄 Why partnerships are a crucial driver of the bioCircular transition Thank you Joppe and Paul for joining me on the podcast and sharing your experiences of working together! 🎙 Tune in on Spotify, Apple Podcasts & Co to hear the full episode and make sure to follow bioCircular Loop for summary articles, informative videos and updates!

#ECB2024 in Rotterdam has been a great success! “It’s been a pleasure to speak at the #ECB2024, where researchers and industry experts come together to explore how biotechnology is applied in innovative ways to address our world’s biggest challenges, namely health, food safety, and climate change.   While sharing PHOTANOL's story about how our platform technology makes use of cyanobacteria as cell factories for CO₂-based chemicals, I also got the opportunity to take a deep-dive into other interesting topics such as novel genetic toolbox strategies and the pros and cons of several interesting chassis organisms.    What I particularly like about the conference is that it bridges the gap between research and industry: the number of parallel sessions covering academic discoveries and industry applications is really well-balanced, which results in valuable knowledge exchange, interesting discussions, and new insights. It confirms again that to make real change happen, it is key that researchers and industry experts collaborate on sustainable solutions. That's why we at PHOTANOL collaborate with different industry partners to help transform their processes to circular, using our platform technology.” Aniek van der Woude | R&D Manager Strain Development #biotechnology #innovation #circularity #rotterdam #collaboration #sustainability #circularity #circularchemicals #sustainablesolutions

CO₂ emissions are one of the driving forces behind climate change, but what if we switch perspectives and turn them into a valuable resource?    During #ACID24 (Amsterdam Chemistry Innovation Day 2024), sabrina botton took part in an interesting panel discussion together with Skytree, the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University. Showcasing different opportunities for CO₂ valorization, it became clear: the technologies to reduce CO₂ levels in the atmosphere or to produce sustainable chemicals from CO₂ are available. And with the right policy support, further scaling could be accelerated even faster.    A special thank you goes out to Amsterdam Chemistry Network, University of Amsterdam and AIMMS VU for organizing such an inspiring event bringing business and industry professionals together to discuss the latest innovations and future trends in the chemical field. #ACID24 #AmsterdamChemistryInnovationDay #aworldintransition #valorization #circularchemicals #circularity #innovation #trends #chemicalindustry #amsterdamsciencepark

🇬🇧 “Compared to bio-based production technologies, the Photanol production technology has an even lower footprint.” In an interview together with Ingeborg Abendanon, editor-in-chief of the VNCI Chemie Magazine, our CTO Jan Wery talked about the chemical industry of tomorrow. He explains why a world without plastics is almost impossible, why we cannot simply switch from fossil to circular plastics overnight, and the extent to which CO₂-based plastics may have more potential than bio-based plastics to successfully turn the chemical industry to circular. You can find the Dutch interview here (Google translate is happy to help): 👉 https://lnkd.in/eX88W_2Y ++++++++++++ 🇳🇱 "De Photanol productie technologie heeft een nóg lagere footprint dan bio-based methodes."
