Did you know that the port of Amsterdam is the biggest cacao port of Europe? And have you heard of Chocolatemakers BV whose mission is not to be the "biggest", but the one with the biggest impact per bar in the chocolate industry? ☀ Learnings from a company that prioritises impact over profit. From the transportation via sail ship and bike, to a roof that serves as one big solar panel creating about 98% of the needed energy, here are our insights from our visit at Chocolate Makers in Amsterdam. Thanks Amber Entius for the tour! ⛵ The Chocolate Makers like to take sustainability to the next level - letting their cacao beans supply depend on the will of nature (& wind). Each year, they await the arrival of the sail ship to deliver the awaited beans for the production. And the sail ship is about to arrive... if you want to celebrate the arrival of the cacao beans on the 03.05 from 15:00-18:00, sign up here: https://lnkd.in/dBa8MpEi The chocolate makers truly take sustainability to their heart. Not only do the bars fund regeneration projects in Brazil, the bars are also transported by bike from Amsterdam to spread to Germany. From the moment we stepped through the doors of the facility, we were greeted with passion and enthusiasm for the art of chocolate making. 👀 Were you aware that Chocolate Makers stands as one of the world's few chocolate producers crafting chocolate from scratch, beginning with raw cocoa beans? This is a testament to their role as pioneers in the bean-to-bar movement. They are committed to sourcing cocoa beans directly from farmers who adhere to fair trade practices, ensuring fair wages and working conditions. 🍫 The highlight of the visit? The decadent chocolate tasting! Indulging in the rich flavors and unique blends that Chocolate Makers has to offer was an absolute treat for the senses. Thank you once again to the entire Chocolate Makers team for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. Your commitment to quality, sustainability, and deliciousness is truly commendable. Thanks for the sweet experience! ©Masato Sezawa Asia Jackowska Marije Remigius Janina Nieper Thanks all for coming! 🌱🍫 #ChocolateLovers #OrganicChocolate #TransparentBusinessImpact

Last month, we hosted an event together with Copper8 and Metabolic. You want to know what it was all about? Transforming the building sector from inside out. Read below!👇 If you are curious about our next event, join us tomorrow at Chocolatemakers BV in Amsterdam to learn more about the impact of the production of chocolate.👋 Sign up via cec.amsterdam.nl@gmail.com #circularamsterdam #circularcommunity #circularnetwork #builtenvironment
🔊 By 2026, the building sector in the Netherlands has used all its CO2 budget to stay within 1.5 degrees. That's only two years away❗️ And whilst this is an increasingly known fact, we still have the social ambition to build almost 1.000.000 new houses in the Netherlands to solve the housing crisis. This is a known dilemma to many countries, including Germany where I am from. Whilst certainly, we might question the target in the first place ("We won't solve the housing crisis by building 1 million houses" Marja Elsinga, Delft University of Technology), it was one the reasons, Liesbeth Sträter, Sybren Bosch, Mara Haverkort and I came together to host an event on "Building within planetary boundaries" at Pakhuis de Zwijger last month. Nico Schouten summarized the advice he would give to Architects as following: 1️⃣ Extend the lifespan of buildings: Everything that you don't demolish, is good. 2️⃣ Alternatives for new built: How much space do we really need? Are there solutions that can serve more needs? 3️⃣ Build differently: How can we built with bio-based and second-life materials? 4️⃣ Making the building materials more sustainable: Building a repertoire of sustainable materials choices all Architects can implement. Which prompted the public to reply: "I am 70+ years old, I am not going to invest anymore into renovating my home. How are we going to tackle this problem?" which prompted a later question of the public "What new narrative do we need to get everyone on board?" Luckily, we had solutions in the room: 👉 Mare Santema from Usespace on the "tinder for spaces" on using existing spaces better 👉 Harvey Otten from on his new project "De Burman", a way of bringing additional living spaces to the city by topping up buildings. 👉 Michel Baars from MOOS (Middle of our Street) to create modular, demountable living room for all that sets a new standard for the construction sector. 👉 Anke Verhagen from Rabo SmartBuilds to demonstrate how they tackle the urgency of the housing crisis (HET IS NU!), by creating temporary solutions on vacant spaces. The main problem still: "Sustainability is more expensive as long as polluting costs nothing. And sustainability will be competitive as soon as polluting costs real money." The second panel on sectorial change was as intriguing as the first: 👉 Rutger Buch from Rotterdam Cirkelstad 👉 Esther Heijink from Rijkswaterstaat 👉 Imme Groet from the Timber Construction Convenvant 👉 Mart van Uden, PhD candidate at Delft University of Technology A few snippets of the discussion: "There is a sort of anti-aging creme for asphalt, that extends the life spam of asphalt (usually it's renewed every 12-14 years)." "The timber covenant aims at 20% of timber construction by 2025 of all new buildings, the current expectations are around 8%" What new narrative do we need? 🍫 Chocolate has a bad reputation in the sustainable world. For many different reasons. One is it's carbon footprint is relatively high and lands right among the impact of eating lamb, coffee or cheese. Why? Because of the common deforestation practice of the rainforest to make space for more coffee beans. We are thus even more delighted to announce our next event at the Chocolatemakers BV in Amsterdam: Amber Entius will give us a short tour and tasting of their chocolate and explain what creates chocolate with an impact - and in this case a positive one. 😉 When? Thursday, 18.04, from 17:30-18:30, walk-in 17:15 Where? Radarweg 32A, Amsterdam How? 🌍 Bouwen binnen planetaire grenzen: hoe maken we het waar? [This event will be in Dutch] De bouwsector staat voor grote opgaven.

"I feel like I am the only fool who cares." and "where is the BlueCity (010) of Amsterdam?" were two of the many sentences that fell during our workshop last week on what excites, frustrates or would empower our community to co-create a circular Amsterdam. Thank you everyone for joining, sharing what excites you, frustrates you and what would empower you! We were very grateful to deep-dive alongside you on how the transition to a local circular economy can be achieved in co-creation. What were our take-aways? 👉 a missing culture of recognition or acknowledgment 👉 a needed sense of belonging for solo- and intrapreneuers 👉 offering a space for creation, a need for a Circular Clubhouse 👉 a joined workspace for solopreneuers of the Circular Economy 👉 a missing art involvement in the Circular Economy to make the transition fun What would you say is missing? And how would you say we will get there? If anything of what you read, sounds like something you would like to collaborate on, feel free to shoot us a message or reach out personally to Mara Haverkort or Janina Nieper. 👇We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts below. #circulareconomy #circularclubhouse #recognition #solopreneuer #changemakers #circularamsterdam

Circular Economy Club Amsterdam heeft dit gerepost
✋"Three times more discussions around the Circular Economy, yet no movement towards a more circular tomorrow." A very brief summary of the launch of the Circular Economy Gap Report 2024 by Circle Economy Foundation and Deloitte. Matthew Fraser emphasized that the world consumed in the last 5 years as many resources as we consumed in the entire 20th century alone. A hard statistical truth about our relationship to the materials we consume. And despite the gained attention, there is no measurable added action on the ground. So the report is for the the changemakers, the rebells and the pioneers with one clear intention: It's time to act. Beyond perfectionism, turning theory into action. To change the system successfully, three key actions were identified: 👉 leveling the policy playing field to incentives circular practices whilst penalizing harmful ones 👉 Adjusting fiscal policy to create true prices (such as landfill taxes, mentioned by Andrea Liverani from the The World Bank) 👉 Building circular expertise and skills across sectors How I would see it: The world is still only 7,2% circular. But in other words 92,8% of potential to be gained. So let's get started! If you are around Amsterdam and would love to get involved and inspired, drop by at our community drinks every third Thursday at the Circular Economy Club Amsterdam. Because if anything, a transition is always stronger, better and faster together.
