From designing smarter to reusing materials, the 9 Circular Strategies can help us drastically reduce CO2 emissions. If we act now, we can achieve up to 30% carbon reduction by 2030, compared to business as usual. 🎥 Curious about these strategies? We’ve created an explainer video to highlight them. The Earth has nine planetary boundaries, critical thresholds we must respect to ensure a safe and healthy planet for human development. It’s not just about reducing CO2 emissions. The built environment impacts critical areas like biodiversity, water use, and resource extraction. At the same time, the sector has an incredible opportunity to contribute to the recovery of some boundaries by working smarter and more sustainably. By rethinking how we work, the sector can not only reduce its impact but also contribute to the recovery of some boundaries. 🎥 We’ve created an explainer video to illustrate the role of the built environment within planetary boundaries. A carbon budget is the maximum amount of CO₂ we can emit globally to keep global warming to a maximum of 2.0 °C , with an aim for 1.5 °C. At the current pace, we’re on track to exhaust the CO₂ budget for the built environment far too quickly. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘄𝗻: 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 2025 has got off to a scary start. Wildfires have ravaged much of Greater Los Angeles, and we are facing an era of deepening polarization, escalating crises, and growing disinformation. It can feel daunting for those working tirelessly to shift momentum toward a thriving biosphere. And yet, we remain inspired by action. Around the world, cities, bioregions, businesses, and grassroots movements are stepping up, showing what’s possible when bold ideas meet collaborative action. At Metabolic, we’ve identified key trends shaping 2025 that will influence our work: 🟢Advancing place-based transformation: Deeply rooted local efforts drive global change, adapting to climate change, and should be supported with alternative financing. 🟢Decentralized power: Cities and regions are leading transformative change, forming networks that transcend national boundaries. 🟢Nature + climate: symbiotic action needed: The climate crisis and biodiversity loss are interconnected, requiring urgent action through regenerative practices to create sustainable systems for people and the planet. 🟢Scaling influence in the EU: The EU’s focus on social stability and systemic governance offers a strong model for balancing economic, environmental, and social priorities through systemic transformation. 🟢Reclaiming the narrative around shared prosperity: The environmental narrative is polarized, reducing commitments. We must focus on solutions for inclusive, sustainable societies. While 2025 will not be easy, history shows us that small, courageous actions can ignite seismic shifts. A future that uplifts humanity, protects the biosphere and cherishes its diversity is within reach.
