AI is Shaping the Future of Healthcare Education at UMCG Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an essential tool in healthcare, but how do we ensure it is used and developed correctly? What are the boundaries, and where do we draw the ethical lines? These are some of the critical questions addressed in the innovative UMCG course on AI in Medicine, as shared by two of our medical students. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ecQmqy5q This past summer, the Data Science Center in Health (DASH) organized its annual Summer School Data Science and AI in Health, welcoming students from around the world. Among the participants were students like Nikkie Fennema, who, driven by her passion for technology, joined the JSM Masterclass on AI in Medicine. “I had already taken the course 'Introduction to Computer Programming in Medicine', but I wanted to develop my skills further,” she says. Building AI Knowledge for Future Doctors This masterclass is part of a broader initiative to integrate AI into medical education. The goal is not to turn all students into data scientists but to help them develop the critical thinking necessary to separate AI’s potential from its limitations. As future doctors and researchers, these students will be equipped to make informed decisions about AI tools as they continue their careers. Evaluating AI’s Role in Patient Care For Anna Kovacs, another participant, learning about AI’s ethical and technical aspects was key. “Many medical students are more focused on ethics and law, but I find the technical side fascinating,” she explains. By asking fundamental questions like, “Does AI align with the goals of patient care?” students like Anna are prepared to decide when AI can enhance medical practice, such as using AI models to detect sepsis in emergency care. Embracing AI in Everyday Medical Tasks “AI helps save time by taking over repetitive tasks, leaving doctors with more time for analysis,” Nikkie points out. Her project on forensic pathology explored how AI could assist in identifying a person’s gender from skeletal remains—tasks that, when automated, allow experts to focus on more complex analyses. Both Nikkie and Anna believe that AI will free up time for doctors to focus on what truly matters: patient care. Anna concludes, “AI is the next step in medical science, much like how robotic surgery once seemed futuristic but is now standard. Next week, team members Peter Van Ooijen and Bart Scheerder, will be speaking at the upcoming Intelligent Health AI event in Basel. Peter is professor of AI in Radiotherapy at the University Medical Center Groningen. He will join a panel discussion on "AI and the Future Workforce: A Force for Good or a Threat to the Current Status Quo?" Together with Felice Burn, Head of AI & Data Science at Kantonsspital Aarau AG, and Sofia Couto da Rocha, Head of Innovation at Lusíadas Saúde, they will explore the critical challenges in organizational structures and cultures necessary to support AI. Key questions include: How do we train future healthcare professionals? And how do we continually upskill our workforce to adopt and operationalize these technologies? Bart is business developer and will present UMCG’s pioneering work on integrating generative AI into patient communication. His presentation will showcase how this groundbreaking application of AI enhances efficiency in managing written patient inquiries, significantly reducing administrative burdens. This innovation not only streamlines operational processes but also frees up valuable time for healthcare providers, allowing them to focus more on delivering direct patient care. No more keyboards, that is the goal DASH expert Job Doornberg is striving for. 💭👨⚕️ During a visit by Minister Fleur Agema of Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport to the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Ziekenhuis (ETZ) this week, the focus was on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Emphasising the need for investment, Agema said, "AI will revolutionise healthcare and I will do everything I can to accelerate this revolution." Currently, healthcare providers spend a lot of time on administrative tasks such as data entry, summarising and transcribing. AI can greatly reduce this burden, giving them more time to focus on what really matters: helping patients. During this visit, Stephanie Klein Nagelvoort Schuit and Kim Post also discussed the possibilities and future applications of AI in healthcare at UMCG. See the aftermovie below. 👇

Unlocking the future of healthcare: our annual Summer School on Data Science and AI captivated participants with a week of innovation and discovery!👨⚕️💥 From 22 to 26 July, led by Rik Wisselink-Bijker and Peter Van Ooijen, our annual summer school took place where participants threw themselves into exciting lectures, practical workshops and lively networking sessions. The programme covered key topics such as data preparation, the ethical and legal dimensions of AI and the use of AI models in clinical settings. In the exciting game ‘AI Hospital’, participants made decisions on the implementation of AI for a fictitious patient. 💭 A standout moment was the group project using synthetic patient data from Lifelines_NL. Participants worked together to design innovative AI tools for clinical practice, with support from experts throughout the week. Although our face-to-face week is over, participants will continue their projects remotely during a hackathon and eventually present their work during a dynamic pitch event. All in all, the Summer School was an incredible opportunity for participants from different backgrounds to learn, collaborate and explore AI in healthcare. Reflecting on a lively event where we explored the future of large language models in healthcare! 🚀👨💻 Yesterday we hosted an inspiring afternoon in the UMCG, with an engaging keynote by Jessica Workum and fascinating presentations by Els Maeckelberghe, Marcel Alberti and Job Doornberg. The event was chaired by Bart Scheerder. We were delighted with the excellent turnout and the dynamic panel discussion, which led to insightful questions on the impact of AI in healthcare. The presentations and discussions highlighted the transformative potential of AI-driven language models for improving patient care, streamlining administrative processes and advancing medical research. They also highlighted the steps we still need to take and the challenges to overcome. Many thanks to all participants and speakers who made this event a remarkable success.
