Very inspiring to learn more at Electronics Watch's #electrowatch24 about how worker-empowered #monitoring can ensure that #duediligence legislation like the #CSDDD and downstream practices translate into better conditions upstream in #electronics and automotive #supplychains, such as in Bolivian Tin mines. To paraphrase the panel: It is all about moving from having one eye monitoring the conditions to thousands of eyes. Many thanks Shigeru Tanaka (PARC), Dongfang Han, (China Labour Bulletin), Lennon Ying-Da Wang (Serve The People), and Jesús Alberto Rea Campos (CISEP).

Multi-stakeholder partnership supporting mine sites in conflict-affected and high-risk areas
Over ons
The EPRM is a multi-stakeholder partnership with the objective to increase the proportion of responsibly produced minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs) and to support socially responsible extraction of minerals that contributes to local development. The EPRM is an accompanying measure to the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation. Since the legislation alone is not enough to make a real change ‘on the ground’, the EPRM is supporting mine sites in CAHRAs. The aim of this support is to enable more mines to comply with the standards required under the OECD Due Diligence Guidance. This in turn will enable companies to source minerals from the mines confident that they will be able to comply with relevant regulations such as the conditions of the EU Regulation. The EPRM focusses on tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold (3TG).

Great work from our implementers! 👍
Artisanal gold producers in Côte d'Ivoire face challenges in meeting requirements of the international market which often looks to the CRAFT Code and OECD Due Diligence Guidance. Recently, 20 members from the COOPEDA mining cooperative and the SICOM trading company participated in a two-day training session on the CRAFT Code. This training aimed to increase understanding and encourage the adoption of the CRAFT Code among these stakeholders. The CRAFT Code provides #artisanal #miners with a framework to show their commitment to reducing risks related to #humanrights, social, economic, and environmental issues. By following this code, artisanal #gold producers can meet international market standards, giving them the chance to sell their gold globally. This activity is part of the Scaling Up project, funded by European Partnership for Responsible Minerals (EPRM) and implemented by IMPACT and Solidaridad Network, in partnership with SICOM and COOPEDA. It offers stakeholders in Côte d'Ivoire an opportunity to explore steps toward responsible sourcing, which is essential for access to the formal market.

The UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals has just released its report ‘Resourcing the Energy Transition’. As mineral demands are expected to almost triple by 2030, resource extraction will drastically accelerate to meet these demands. It is therefore crucial, the Panel states, to ‘ensure that the countries and local communities endowed with these resources are the ones to benefit the most’. To guide critical energy transition minerals towards equity and justice, the Panel proposes 7 Guiding Principles as well as 5 Actionable Recommendations that serve to embed and maintain the guiding principles. EPRM welcomes the report and especially applauds the inclusion of the Actionable Recommendation that we need to ‘empower artisanal and small-scale miners to practice responsible mining. Globally, around 45 million people make their living directly in Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM), while it is estimated that another 134 to 269 million people indirectly depend on ASM through service and downstream activities. Moreover, considering the adverse effects and opportunities for development that are associated with ASM, as well as its current and future contributions to mineral supply chains, attention to responsible ASM is key. Driving the responsible production by and sourcing from artisanal and small-scale mining is at the heart of our work. EPRM supports responsible ASM through the various projects we fund and facilitates increased access to formal markets for ASM operations. Moreover, we enable artisanal and small-scale miners to participate and be heard in policy and decision-making circles. As a unique multi-stakeholder initiative, the EPRM looks forward to engaging with the Panel’s principles and recommendations, to continue our collaboration with members and partners, and to further support responsible ASM. Great news! The EPRM welcomes 8 new members to our partnership! We are glad to see growing interest from both NGO’s & companies in sourcing #responsibleminerals, with a focus on #ASM-communities. Looking forward in working together with these 4 NGO’s: redsocial from Peru; IWiM and The Impact Facility both from the UK and the Population and Development Initiative from Tanzania. And with these 4 new supply chain actors: FAIREVER - Artisanal Gold from Germany; Fairalloy from Colombia and BMW Group-Group from Germany and Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd. from the UK. https://ap.lc/NfLPG

EPRM's Erik C. Post participated in Royal Philips inspiring stakeholder dialogue to learn more about its sustainability programs and to contribute to its 2030 sustainability strategy. The dynamic discussions about how to concretely realize Philips’ ambitious objectives demonstrate how multistakeholder dialogues are pivotal in implementing due diligence regulations and working towards responsible materials supply chains.
