For 4 incredible years, FSMA hosted the World Emptying Challenge events, a fun innovation and collaboration in the sanitation sector. From South Africa to Zambia, Uganda, and Senegal, these challenges provided a platform for pit emptiers worldwide to showcase their skills and knowledge, promoting best practices and standardization in city-wide inclusive sanitation. As we transition, we are excited to see the legacy of the World Emptying Challenge. We are excited to share the next iteration of the event at WorldSkills Zambia in Livingstone next April. The challenge will be delivered by LSC, in partnership with PASA, AfWASA and the local utility partner from Zambia, Nawasco." A huge thank you to all the participants, partners, and supporters who have been part of this incredible journey! Your dedication and passion have been instrumental in driving positive change in the pit-emptying sector on a global scale." https://zurl.co/Ji36

We might be closing our doors but the persistence to integrate faecal sludge management as part of broader systems must live on. One of our members rightly pointed out “FSM is part of wider sanitation, public health, environment and public service systems. Collaborating with other organisations and events that are even further away from WASH like municipal solid-waste and other public services is crucial.” https://zurl.co/s9SG #FSM #WASH #SDG6

As we reflect on our journey, we're reminded of the incredible impact achieved through collaboration. To our partners and members over the years, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your support and dedication have been instrumental in advancing the cause of inclusive sanitation. Thank you for standing alongside us and advocating for the critical importance of faecal sludge management in achieving safe sanitation for all. As we approach the end of our activities, we're confident in the continued efforts of our partners to drive change and ensure universal access to safe sanitation. Together, we've made a difference, and together, we'll continue to make strides towards a brighter, healthier future. #sanitation #FSM #SDG6

🚀 Shaping the Future of FSM 🌐 With more than 3 billion people globally relying on non-sewered sanitation, including faecal sludge management (FSM), the significance of FSM cannot be overlooked. In informal settlements, housing over 1 billion individuals, and in rapidly growing urban areas, FSM remains a vital component of sanitation infrastructure. As we transition, it's imperative that sanitation networks continue advocating for the prioritization of FSM within inclusive sanitation agendas. We encourage sanitation professionals to foster connections with other groups dedicated to FSM, such as IWA Specialist groups, SuSanA working groups, and the Faecal Sludge Management Working Group led by the Global WASH Cluster. Together, let's ensure FSM receives the attention it merits. 📸 credit: BORDA #sanitation #SDG6 #systemschange

“Every investment in on-site sanitation is a step towards a healthier and more equitable future." -Ibra Sow, PASA President shares their gratitude for FSMA's partnership and support of PASA since its inception in 2019. The Pan-African Association of Sanitation Actors (Association Panafricaine des Acteurs de l'Assainissement, PASA/APAA) was launched in Cape Town, South Africa, on the sidelines of the International Conference on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM5/AFricaSan5), with the aim of creation a synergy in the interventions of private sector sanitation actors for the development of the sanitation sector in Africa. PASA will be rightful recipient our unspent funds upon our closing. In 2023, we co-hosted a conference in Abidjan with AfWASA that brought water and sanitation professionals together to talk. The conference had over 3,600 participants and visitors to discuss critical issues with 140 different events, such as increasing the representation of diverse voices and uniting the WASH sectors for sustainable progress on SDG6. We also hosted a film festival with 30 short films about sanitation. A hugely significant outcome of this conference was the Ministerial signing of the “Abidjan Declaration for a sustainable management of resources and access for all to water and sanitation in Africa”. This Declaration advocates for the international community to consider water and sanitation as elements of a single right and ensure sustainable financing of water and sanitation services, signaling high-level support for increased attention on sanitation. https://zurl.co/okwO #FSM #Conference #CoteDIvoire
