The draft Liquid Waste Management (LWM) rules by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India (MoEFCC) open up robust opportunities to integrate the values of circularity within the sanitation value chain. With guidelines and mandates to enhance wastewater treatment, reuse and septage management across urban and rural areas, the notification seeks to address the growing wastewater crisis by overhauling LWM. The notification paves the way to address critical questions of sustainability and climate resilience within the sanitation value chain. To explore the impacts of the new LWM rules, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi (CSE) is organising a webinar that shall highlight strategies for implementation, and discuss technologies aligning with the decentralised model. Great to see initiatives like these that accelerate the journey towards climate resilient urban sanitation, especially in difficult hilly terrains that are disproportionately vulnerable to climate hazards.

In collaboration with Uttarakhand Urban Development Directorate and Peyjal Vibhag, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) recently hosted an enlightening two-day exposure visit for 25 newly elected ULB representatives and 5 state officials from #Nagaland. With local governance resuming after 15 years, the visit offered a valuable first-hand look at #sustainable urban practices. Officials explored diverse sites, including a PPP-based pink toilet in Nainital, a 28 MLD STP in Haldwani, a compressed #biogas plant converting household waste to electricity, dry waste processing at an MRF, and a 125 KLD FSTP at #Rudrapur. They also explored slope stabilization efforts on the outskirts of #Nainital and a 125 MLD water treatment plant in Ramnagar. Sessions organised with Mr Vishal Mishra (IAS), Municipal Commissioner Haldwani provided valuable insights into the functioning #urbanlocalbodies. He also showcased the formulation of the “Baini Sena” project, a community engagement programme for effective service delivery and user charge collection. Proud to support Nagaland’s leaders as they embark on a new chapter in public service! #SwachhataHiSeva2024 #UrbanSanitation #SwabhavSwachhata NFSSM Alliance | WaterAid | USAID | Swachh Bharat Urban| Asian Development Bank (ADB) | KfW | Smart Cities Mission | Sanitation Coalition | Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation | Jal Jeevan Mission | Namami Gange | Rajiv Mishra | BORDA - Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association ICIMOD

Sustainability and inclusive sanitation go hand in hand; circular sanitation systems are critical to help cities become climate resilient. The work of our partners like Water Sanitation and Hygiene Institute (WASH Institute) and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) is essential to mainstream this approach at a policy level.

At the recent workshop on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in the Hilly Regions of Uttarakhand, facilitated by the Water Sanitation and Hygiene Institute (WASH Institute) and held from 21 - 22 October 2024, Sachin Sahani, SCBP team presented NIUA’s role in supporting the State’s efforts in sanitation. Since 2019, #NIUA has been working in partnership with the State, providing handholding support on #capacitybuilding, policy advocacy, and technical assistance. The presentation included NIUA’s work in promoting Fecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) and decentralized sanitation approaches. The key focus was on exploring opportunities for reusing treated water and identifying various national missions and schemes that can be leveraged to fund used water treatment initiatives. The team shared insights on the Parvat Manthan initiative, a dedicated forum for cross-learning and knowledge exchange on best practices in #sanitation and their adoption throughout the Indian Himalayan region. #WASH, #SwachhBharat  #urbandevelopment NFSSM Alliance | Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation | Dr Mahreen Matto | Shantanu Kumar Padhi | Sadaf Shah | Harshvardhan Nigam | Anant Mitra | Tanya Ahmed | Suvajit Dey | Ar. Digital Public Infrastructure promises to transform essential public services, making them more accessible, inclusive, and fostering smoother operations between government departments and stakeholders. An e-governance model exemplifying this success is Odisha's SUJOG platform (Sustainable Urban Services in a Jiffy by Odisha Government). Through SUJOG-FSSM, the platform is including every stakeholder of the sanitation value chain, right from citizens to FSTP operators, to avail and track sanitation services in a timely and efficient manner.
