However, e-methanol gives this ghastly gas a new role: as a raw material for creating sustainable marine fuel (#SMF). Here’s how this innovative process has the potential to change the game. E-methanol is a more sustainable form of #greenmethanol, produced by capturing CO2 from industrial processes or the air and combining it with hydrogen from renewable energy like wind or solar ☀️💨 Several experiments are now also being done to use carbon capture installations on ship exhausts, enabling shipowners to set up onboard carbon capture and storage (#OCCS) on their vessels. The dream is to make shipping fuel from these captured carbon molecules, creating a somewhat circular system ♻ Okay, back to e-methanol: Producing it not only utilises excess CO2 but also leverages renewable energy to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis. The resulting #emethanol serves as a carbon-neutral fuel and chemical feedstock, offering a promising solution to reduce carbon emissions and shipping's dependence on fossil fuels. After successfully sailing on HVO20 for 3+ years, Stolt Tankers has upgraded its Stolt Main vessel to GoodFuels HVO100. With the help of Bunkerstation Papendrecht, a sailing bunker station that continuously has our HVO-based fuel in stock, Stolt Main increases its CO2 reduction percentage to approximately 90%. 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝟭𝟬𝟭: 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀-𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗹 You might have heard or read about this interesting fuel type in a webinar or whitepaper about future fuel pathways. But what is mass-balanced methanol, exactly? And how does it relate to #marinedecarbonisation? Mass-balanced methanol is a key type of green methanol, produced through the mass balance approach, which blends renewable and fossil-based feedstocks in a single production system. The process starts with biogas, generated from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste, being fed into the natural gas grid, where it mixes with traditional natural gas. From there, methanol production plants convert this gas mixture into syngas (synthesis gas) and ultimately into methanol using a catalytic process. To certify the methanol as green, producers purchase "biogas-tickets" that correspond to the amount of renewable gas used in production, ensuring the final product is officially certified as mass-balanced ✅ This approach supports a smooth transition to more sustainable production methods without requiring new infrastructure. However, it’s worth mentioning that traceability can be less accurate because the final product isn’t fully biogenic. Because for the first time in nearly a century, a large, wind-powered cargo ship has just crossed the Atlantic 🤩 The new cargo ship set sail from France to New York last month, loaded with hundreds of pallets of champagne, wine, and cognac (fitting cargo for a vessel sailing from France 😄). TOWT, the French startup that designed the ship, argues that sailing cargo ships can viably compete with container ships running on fossil fuels. We applaud their boldness and could not agree more.
