IKC Suikerzijde, Groningen For the competition of IKC Suikerzijde, we proposed a school with a variety of outdoor spaces like a schoolyard and play- terraces, and -balconies. While it wasn’t a win, we’re proud of the results and the work we put into this project.

Primary school Edison Wonderful to see our project in use as kids bike past the restored school wall and the remarkable stepped gables. After the delivery last year, seeing the youngest children using the coatracks and having lunch in the refectory shows the practical, day-to-day use of the school. The children of primary school Edison can finally play on one of the playgrounds of their new school, which still has its original typological layout with a sequence of outdoor spaces. We are proud and grateful for the opportunities and enjoy the first signs of use and appropriation of the new school. 6,5 years after starting with the competition we look back at a long but always positive and respectful design-and building process. A wonderful site for an existing school with monumental qualities and an extension, an urgent but rewarding design task, positively critical and demanding users, a very likeminded colleague as our client and our wonderful advisors Jaap Dijks, Sabine Okkerse, Stanny van Gysel and RCR.
