The Olympics in Paris have come to an end just yesterday, so let's take time to reflect what efforts were taken to make this event the most #green in the history! 💚🏅 👉 With temperatures in Paris, Marseille and Nice marking 41 °C, it is even more admirable that the cooling system for the event was based underground, working on a renewable resource such as water. 👉 All games were meant to run on 100% renewable energy, aiming to fulfil the promise to reduce carbon emissions by half in comparison to previous Olympics' hosts. 👉 In order not to exhaust resources and recycle in the spirit of circular economy, almost all of the buildings in the Athletes Village were either preexisting or easy to clean up right after the Games. New building - Aquatics Centre - was built using low-carbon methods and recycled construction materials. What is more it run solely on solar energy! ☀ 👉 We cannot forget about the iconic swim of Anne Hidalgo which confirmed that the River Seine was cleaned and safe for olympic disciplines like triathlon. What a step forward for the city! 📈 🌊 Paris Olympics are setting an example as the first that were organised in-line with the Paris Agreement ✅. The coming weeks will most probably give us confirmation if the targets were really met but we can already congratulate all the medallists and participants of their amazing performance! 🏊♂️ 💪 Sources: Goodenergy, UNEP-WCMC, Forbes Photo source: The Guardian

Let us introduce you to some #naturaldisasters related numbers that may shock you but underline the urgent necessity to address this issue quickly and holistically 👇 👇 📍 While in 1900 there were only 6 natural disaster events recorded, in 2023 this number has risen up to 410 📍 Floods and extreme weather make up the biggest share of natural disasters that happen yearly 📍Storms, earthquakes, floods and droughts are the most costly natural disasters that may cost from 20 billion $ up to even 100 billion $ yearly 📍 Accordingly to Our World in Data it is also worth noting that many statistics are still missing. Almost half of the events does not have estimated financial damages recorded. For insured damages almost 90% of data is not available. At Meteory we are constantly working on new datasets and data visualisations that can help local governments and private companies to measure and monitor the occurrence of such disasters. Urban heat monitoring is vital for public health, urban resilience and safeguarding the environment, especially in rapidly growing cities like New Delhi, India. 🔥 ♨ Recent reports revealed that the city experienced a record high temperature of 49.9°C in late May, with nights cooling down by only 8.5°C compared to 12.2°C in more rural areas. This persistent heat, only by the urban heat island effect, deprives residents of rest and recovery, particularly those without air conditioning. The strain on resources like electricity and water further complicates the situation, leading to widespread heat-related illnesses and fatalities. By monitoring urban heat, we can identify hotspots, lead informed urban planning, and implement cooling strategies. ☃ Check out our new article that delves into how we can help you to monitor heat and droughts at Meteory and why is that so important 👇

Did you know that floods are the most common natural disasters? In 2023 alone they affected around 32 million people globally taking away their homes, property and even lives. 🏚 Climate change causes rising sea levels and unprecedented rainfalls that only exacerbates the phenomenon. If our planet indeed warms up by 1.5°C in the coming 20 years, it is estimated that population endangered with floods will enlarge by 24% (accordingly to Statista). At Meteory we try to find solutions for this alarming issue ✅ We developed detailed flood risk maps using data to simulate potential floods in specific areas. We can also forecast river discharge up to 30 days in advance! Check out how we do it below! 👇 👇 Any questions? Reach out to Alexandre and Sofiane 🧠

In the beginning of June an immense flood inundated the region of Bavaria in Germany causing: 👉 damage of this year’s harvest and farmlands of size comparable to 133,000 football pitches 👉 evacuation of thousands people and death of a few 👉 insured losses at around €2 billion As only 47% of buildings in Bavaria are insured against natural hazards, the total amount of losses will be adequately higher and the million-Euros damages will have to be repaid by the Bavarian local governments 💰 . With claims for natural hazards reaching the highest level ever recorded by German insurance companies in recent years, it is time to find an effective preventive tools! Through our Meteory platform we are able to help insurers and local governments to predict the incoming natural disasters like floods. The flood risk forecasting model provides predictions of river discharge with up to 30-day advance, utilising precomputed floods' return periods thresholds (2, 5, 10, and 20 years). 🌊 On the picture below you can see that, with time passing, our maps show the bigger probability of a massive flood in this region 🗺 . The closer to the 1st of June, the bigger risk was alarmed with the use of colours. The brightest colour (6) shows that the probability of a 5-year flood exceeds 75%. Our data allows for real-time (and even beforehand) monitoring thanks to which it becomes easier to predict the humours of nature. 🌍 Navigating the Challenges in P&C Insurance: Data is Key! 📊 Recent insights highlight significant pain points for P&C professionals. According to a recent article on Reinsurance News, catastrophe losses are expected to surge, potentially leading to increased rates and decreased homeowner protection. This scenario presents critical challenges for our industry: ⚠ Escalating Catastrophe Losses: The frequency and intensity of natural catastrophes are on the rise, pushing losses to unprecedented levels. 📈 Rising Premiums: With higher losses, insurers may need to raise rates, placing a heavier financial burden on homeowners. 📉 Diminishing Coverage: To manage these costs, insurers might reduce the scope of coverage, leaving many homeowners with inadequate protection. The root of these issues often stems from a common factor: the lack of reliable data on natural catastrophes, weather, and environmental conditions. At Meteory, we believe that robust, accurate data is essential for addressing these challenges head-on. 🔍 Why Reliable Data Matters: - Better Risk Assessment: Allows for more precise risk modeling and underwriting. Avoid scenarios such as concentration of assets in highly exposed areas. - Informed Decision-Making: Data-driven insights enable insurers to make well-informed decisions regarding coverage and pricing. - Enhanced Customer Protection: Accurate data helps in designing policies that provide adequate protection without excessive premiums and allow the set up of early warning systems for proactive disaster response.  At Meteory, we are committed to providing the highest quality data on natcat and environmental conditions, empowering insurers and risk professionals to navigate catastrophe volatility with confidence and precision.  Let's transform these challenges into opportunities through the power of data! 💡📈 Article in the comments!
