Earlier this month, the CABES project, funded by International Climate Initiative (IKI) and supported by UNEP-WCMC and IPBES, conducted a stakeholder workshop in Sierra Leone🇸🇱 to introduce the aims of Output 3 of the project on national platforms. The meeting also convened experts on biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) to raise awareness and share updates on the IPBES implementation and the Convention on Biological Diversity. 🌎🌳🏞️ Hosted by the project’s local partner, the Research Institute for Sustainability Transitions (RIST), with support from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), the workshop aimed to: 🔸Identify existing national platforms to support dialogues on BES issues 🔸Engage with the IPBES process among stakeholders A key outcome from the meeting was the identification of existing platforms and policies across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the private and public sectors, NGOs, CSOs, and other stakeholders. For next steps, RIST, supported by IPBES and CBD (UN Biodiversity) focal points and guided by UNEP-WCMC, will conduct a rapid assessment of existing BES platforms to identify enablers and barriers to inform the CABES_iki project. The assessment will also identify existing national BES policies in Sierra Leone that could benefit from the IPBES assessments and products. 📢Call for peer review! Experts at UNEP-WCMC, in collaboration with Women4Biodiversity, have worked with partners to develop a new draft methodology for an indicator to track progress towards Target 23 of the GBF. The indicator helps Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (UN Biodiversity) to comprehensively measure progress towards the national implementation of the CBD Gender Plan of Action, which will significantly contribute to the achievement of Target 23. 🙋♀️🌱 Parties and observers are invited to participate in this peer review and share feedback to help refine and finalise the indicator methodology in time for #COP16. 📅Last day to submit the review: 2️⃣3️⃣ August 2024 Learn more about the draft methodology and feedback submission process here: https://lnkd.in/dQtfeRsb This initiative has been funded by SwedBio, a development programme at the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

The fast-evolving world of carbon markets has facilitated the generation and trading of carbon credits and offsetting of carbon emissions since the 1990s. However, the popularity and demand for high-quality carbon credits have also led to increased scrutiny with calls for more efficacy and transparency. In a project conducted by UNEP-WCMC and the Endangered Landscapes Programme, our experts explore how to make sense of the rapidly advancing carbon markets and support #restoration activities in Europe. In many countries, national spatial data relevant to Nature-based Solutions have not yet been developed or are inaccessible. This type of data is essential for spatial planning for areas suitable for nature-based solutions, and needed to meet nature and climate objectives. 🌐🌿 A paper from UNEP-WCMC and partners examines the opportunities that high-quality global spatial datasets offer in the absence of national data to support decision making. It includes a detailed decision-tree to help national experts decide whether to use global data and is accompanied by a dashboard review of global datasets. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/db6sY9Ec
