𝐀 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲-𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝-𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 With the new emerging technologies, the amount of power plant options for non-nuclear submarines is increasing, especially for the submerged power supply. Fuel cell technology enables an air independent power supply, operating on pure hydrogen and pure oxygen. Lithium-ion batteries can be used as an alternative for the lead-acid batteries. Nevesbu's power plant concept comparison clearly highlights the benefit of the use of lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells in submarine designs. This raised the question if it might be feasible to eliminate the diesel-generators for the submarine design completely. This would simplify the submarine’s design drastically, since the amount of systems on board will be reduced significantly. Furthermore, it will create more space and weight budget for the installation of lithium-ion batteries and/or fuel cells. Two design and feasibility studies were performed to investigate the feasibility of such a design, from both a technical and an operational perspective. You can read more about the outcomes of these design and feasibility studies in this article on our website: https://lnkd.in/gVcjbNmy #submarinengineering #submarinedesign #electricsubmarine #hybridsubmarine

𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬, 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Only the final checks were made by expensive FE analyses. “Expensive as they were, these limited models would probably be rejected nowadays, if put to the test”, states specialist engineer Jack Reijmers. With respect to structures under external pressure, such as submarines, FE analysis has matured enormously. And Jack, who works at Nevesbu since 1982 and experienced all these developments, knows this like no other. He has recently written an article for NAFEMS’ Benchmark magazine about how numerical model analysis has evolved over the years. Over time, analysis became simulation, and the umbrella discipline now covers much more than just analyses. The complete life cycle of a product is addressed from the early beginning up to demolition at the end of life. The emphasis is no longer solely on a design that meets the requirements, but also on the logistics after delivery, including maintenance and monitoring of the performance of the object under consideration. Below you can read Jack's article, in which he takes you through the developments in FE analysis over the past decades. #navalarchitecture #FEanalyses #numericalmodelanalyses #structuralstrength #submarines #navalvessels #NAFEMS

𝐀𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬 It is very important to reliably estimate the damping coefficients for structures consisting of several materials. Nevesbu recently conducted an experiment to estimate the damping coefficients in a cable pack supported by a steel tray. In this experiment, a steel beam was fixed to the desk with clamps, and at its free end a smartphone was fastened. A basic smartphone’s app was installed and used to record oscillation signals. Recordings were made with the steel beam only, and with different bundles of cables attached to the beam. This experiment showed that valuable information could be obtained through a simple experimental setup. Although widely accepted values for damping are available, structures with several material components can easily be tested, and the outcome gives a better input for transient FE analyses. This Wednesday, 12 June, our colleagues Jack Reijmers and Alessandro Zambon, PhD will tell all about this interesting experiment at the NAFEMS Conference in Staffordshire, UK. You can also read more about this experiment on our website: https://lnkd.in/e9gXsUxm #NRC24 #NAFEMS #dampingcoefficients #nevesbu

Nevesbu to present paper about '𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐄 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬' @ the NAFEMS congress in Staffordshire, UK Damping entails significant effects in transient analyses, and it is a mistake to ignore it to reach a conservative solution. It is also possible that the analysis delivers no meaningful results. For steel structures, a dimensionless damping coefficient of 1% of the critical damping is widely accepted; however, for structures consisting of several materials, damping coefficients may be higher and estimating them reliably is very important. Nevesbu has written a paper in which the case of damping in a cable pack supported by a steel tray is studied. On Wednesday, 12 June, our colleagues Jack Reijmers and Alessandro Zambon, PhD will present this paper at the NAFEMS congress. 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 To retrieve realistic damping coefficients, free-vibration signals were acquired using a steel beam without and with cables attached to it. These registrations were made through a basic smartphones app, which uses the device own acceleration sensor. Read more about this study in the paper on our website or visit our presentation at the NAFEMS congress!
