On behalf of North Sea Energy I visited the Ecology Day, hosted by Jan Douwe Kroeske (Stichting #SummerLab) on 31 October at Huis Ter Duin in Noordwijk. Themed around the #Ecology of the #NorthSea, a range of engaging presentors took the stage, such as: ·       The founder of ‘#VandeWadden’ showed us how they look at the possibilities and opportunities for growers in the Wadden area from a broad perspective. Their potato is one of the first products on the market, breaking a lance for growing crops on saline soil. ·       We learned about the innovative sustainability solutions the #SailorsforSustainability met during their sailing adventures around the globe. ·       Gerda Verburg of Element NL and Anne Albers (national surfing champion and sustainability ambassador) picked up where they left off a previous dialogue about their intentions and ideas for the North Sea. ·       Joris Koornneef and Eva den Boer shared some inspiring stories after their first year as Our Mayor(s) of your North Sea, such as their podcast series about the North Sea, titled #Zeebenen. Joris Koornneef made his financial reward for his work available to three charities, including to Klaudie Bartelink of Dutch Maritime Productions, as one of the producers of the film The Wild North Sea. It truly was an inspiring day, with much thanks to the chefs of #HuisterDuin who served us a high-level seafood dinner.

🌊 Unlocking the Potential of the North Sea: CO₂ Transport and Storage Infrastructure 🌊 On September 19, 2024, we had the privilege of hosting an insightful online workshop as part of the North Sea Energy programme. Industry leaders and experts came together to discuss the future of CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure in the North Sea basin, with a vision extending to 2050. This gathering highlighted the critical need for developing robust CO₂ infrastructure to achieve the EU’s ambitious climate targets. Key Highlights from the workshop: • State of play: Filip Neele from TNO kicked off the session with an overview of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Europe. • Future infrastructure: Dan Paterson from Xodus shared projections for CCS infrastructure in the North Sea, focusing on cost-efficient transport and storage solutions. • Project pipeline: Andrew Cavanagh from Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage discussed upcoming CO₂ storage projects. • Regulatory landscape: Toby Lockwood from the Clean Air Task Force provided insights into the regulatory frameworks needed for a Europe-wide market. • Project insights: Sander Nijman from Shell offered a project perspective on the Aramis project. We are excited to continue this journey towards a more sustainable future. Together, we can unlock the full potential of the North Sea for CO₂ transport and storage. Last week our colleagues Anne-Mette Jørgensen, Mariken Betsema and Jylles van der Vliet visited the Offshore Experience in Theater de Kampanje in Den Helder! This year's theme, "Healthy Energy," was particularly relevant to North Sea Energy, focusing on promoting a sustainable and future-proof green and blue economy. The sessions, moderated by Joost Hoebink, delved into a range of critical topics. Discussions encompassed the complex issue of valuing nature in economic terms, the challenges of space allocation in the North Sea, the importance of system integration and ecological considerations in offshore energy projects, and the potential for food production within the blue economy framework. Anne-Mette Jørgensen gave a very insightful masterclass on system integration and ecology (slide 2). The masterclass highlighted the dual challenge of using the North Sea for energy transition purposes while maintaining ecological balance. It emphasized that the North Sea is one of the busiest seas globally, and its role in the energy transition is growing, which necessitates careful management to ensure ecological preservation. Meanwhile, Mariken Betsema and Jylles van der Vliet hosted a NSE stand at the experience where the North Sea Energy Atlas was presented on a touch table (slide 3). The Atlas allows users to oversee all relevant activities that take place on the North Sea, for example: showing ecological activity, operational and planned windfarms, the hydrogen backbone, salt caverns and defense facility locations. There were plenty of positive reactions and useful feedback from participants, who were able to explore the Atlas by themselves. The Offshore Experience attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the sea ports, oil and gas industries, fisheries, government bodies, wind energy companies, and nature organizations. Also, a human capital aspect was included with the participation of students from Vonk, who were introduced to various offshore projects (slide 4). Hopefully their visit to the Offshore Experience inspired the next generation of professionals in the offshore industry. Overall, the Offshore Experience 2024 in Den Helder was a comprehensive platform for discussing the future of offshore activities in the North Sea region. Human capital is an essential pillar for the offshore energy system integration. we need to have enough people with the right skills to manufacture, install, operate, and remove the offshore infrastructure. In the roadmap that was developed in a previous phase of NSE, Human Capital was identified as one of the critical success factors in realizing energy system integration on the North Sea.    The North Sea Energy Society and Stakeholders Workpackage is looking at human capital and a stakeholder workshop was held on the 3rd of September. Onno de Vreede and Niek Reijmers have looked at the employment that will arise in the future. For Offshore Wind, Green Hydrogen Production, Carbon Capture and Storage and Decommissioning and the synergies between these technologies they delved into the data and knowledge from NSE partners and external organizations and presented their intermediate results.    Please get in touch if you like to learn more.

The North Sea Energy team is present in two ways: 1. Anne-Mette Jørgensen hosts a masterclass on #ecology and #systemintegration. Presenting and discussing the results from the NSE research on nature inclusive design. The North Sea Energy Atlas is an interactive tool designed to assist in optimizing the balance between vested and future offshore interests so that opportunities can be initiated to speed up the energy transition. The atlas provides an international overview of a range of important activities at the North Sea in the field of energy, transport, ecology, fishery and defense. It shows valuable insights on current energy flows from oil, gas, and wind production, as well as insights into the future development of offshore energy systems. Looking at transitions from various perspectives: To enhance the participatory process, we interview NSE participants, representatives from politics, policy and administration, and stakeholders from the sector to share their vision on the role of the North Sea in the energy transition and the opportunities and challenges they see for system integration. We interviewed Annemiek Asschert, Manager New Energies & Innovation at Energie Beheer Nederland, to reflect on the emerging energy transition offshore. EBN has been a partner in the North Sea Energy program ever since the start.   Can you describe the origins of EBN?    “EBN was established 50 years ago to invest in oil and gas projects on behalf of the Dutch State. Today, our activities focus on three key areas: the gas transition, the heat transition, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) and transport systems. Like the world around us, we're changing too. But one thing will never change: we will continue to represent public interests in the energy supply, now and in the years to come.“   Annemiek, what is your role in EBN?   “As Manager New Energies & Innovation I am responsible for business development of New Energies and Innovation projects, onshore and offshore, which also includes re-use of existing mining locations and infrastructure for the energy transition and development of Underground Hydrogen Storage. I am also the main point of contact for the NSE program, but there are several people from different parts of EBN that contribute to several work packages in the program.”   What is EBN’s role in the NSE program?   “EBN is participant in the North Sea Energy program since the start of the program. As a non-operating state participant, we have gained a lot of experience and knowledge of the existing offshore energy system. We are working towards a sustainable offshore system. We are transitioning from an oil and gas-based system towards wind, hydrogen, and other forms of sustainable energy offshore. During the transition time however, all these different forms of energy, need to exist next to each other. To optimize this system EBN contributes from several perspectives. What functions do we see, where at the North Sea, i.e., hydrocarbon prospectivity, CCS possibilities and Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS), and what timelines do we foresee for all these different functions?”   EBN's role has changed over time, from mainly O&G to other / broader energy system activities. In what ways does participating in NSE help you to achieve your ambition to ‘energize the energy transition’ as your website states?    “The NSE program emphasizes the necessity to look at the offshore energy system from a broad perspective.
