In Latin America and the Caribbean, the energy sector represents the main source of #methane emissions. At OLADE - Organización Latinoamericana de Energía's First Regional Methane Summit, experts gathered to discuss best practices to #CutMethane from oil and gas, including through stronger data collection, monitoring, and reporting to drive effective action. CATF's Jonathan Banks emphasized the need for more robust methane inventories, highlighting that better data means better strategies to tackle emissions and reduce the climate impact of methane. https://lnkd.in/dBf27v-C #CumbreMetano2024 #CambioClimático #EnergíaSostenible

As Europe ramps up its deployment of #carboncapture and storage to meet climate targets, it has become clear that captured CO2 will need to travel freely around the region for storage. Not every industrial site in Europe will have access to suitable geology for CO2 storage within its own country. But the #UK’s exit from the #EU has meant that its huge potential storage capacity can no longer be used for CO2 emissions from EU-based sources. In a new blog, CATF’s Toby Lockwood explores how maximising available storage sites, including opening up access to UK storage, can drive down costs and accelerate decarbonisation in both jurisdictions. https://lnkd.in/esFsniin

Global air travel – responsible for 2-3% of total CO2 emissions in 2022 – is a critical sector to decarbonize to meet our climate goals. Decarbonizing aviation is one of the most difficult challenges within the transportation sector – in large part because the weight and space constraints of air travel are most cost-effectively met using energy-dense fossil fuels. Many countries have made commitments to reduce the aviation industry’s climate impacts by increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuels, but aviation demand could double projected sustainable aviation fuel by midcentury. CATF analysis evaluates other fuel options that could supplement sustainable aviation fuel shortfalls and ultimately finds that a combination of fuels is a plausible deep decarbonization strategy for the aviation sector. https://lnkd.in/e9TEykUC

The voluntary carbon market is facing an existential crisis. In a new op-ed for Latitude Media, CATF’s Kathy Fallon writes that “the growing gulf between opportunity and reality — both in the United States and internationally — underscores the need for additional government oversight of the voluntary carbon market to protect investors, prevent manipulation, and ensure the market delivers the intended climate benefits.” https://lnkd.in/eggukJHk

60% of EU countries have yet to submit their final updated National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs)for 2030 – two months after the deadline. CATF's Alejandra Muñoz Castañer spoke with POLITICO Europe on the importance of using #NECPs to address the EU's climate planning gap. Europe’s NECPs are critical planning documents meant to set out the EU Member States’ targets, policies, and measures that will enable them to reach the 2030 EU climate targets. https://lnkd.in/eAwRfF5T

Faced with global climate change, growing energy demand, and ever-increasing energy security challenges – #nuclear energy stands out as a pragmatic option to diversify and strengthen our nation’s energy supply and meet these challenges. CATF’s Executive Director, Armond Cohen, makes the case for the U.S. to reengage and re-establish its historic leadership role in realizing the huge promise of nuclear energy. https://lnkd.in/grN_jc9h

How do we make progress towards innovative, bold, and affordable utility systems in Sub-Saharan Africa? This month, Clean Air Task Force’s Africa Energy and Climate Innovation Program, in partnership with Arthur Energy Advisors, hosted the West Africa Utilities Roundtable in Accra, #Ghana. The roundtable brought together 24 utility leaders from six Sub-Saharan Africa countries to discuss common challenges and paths forward for robust utility systems in the region. The discussions focused on common challenges the utilities face in service provision, effective mechanisms to reduce technical and commercial losses, and the need for more innovative programs to ensure greater investment attractiveness and financial sustainability. Roundtable participants spoke with a financial group that invests in the electricity sector on the continent and provides technical assistance to utilities seeking to improve their operations. CATF staff presented ongoing research regarding the power sector’s Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) for 48 African countries and 5 sub-regional groupings. The WACC analysis seeks to capture country-specific costs that can be applied to electricity technology investments and enables governments, multilateral development banks, and other stakeholders to create policies that encourage greater investments into the continent’s power sector.

Congratulations to our partners Carbon Mapper and partners Planet and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the successful launch of Tanager-1. This new satellite will be an invaluable tool in driving greater emission transparency, providing the granularity needed to pinpoint #methane leaks and drive reductions at the source. Immediate reduction of methane pollution is the best strategy we have to reduce the rate of global warming right now, and advanced methane monitoring via satellites and emissions data are crucial for achieving this. A group of policy experts and academics, including CATF’s Kathy Fallon and Rebecca Sanders-DeMott, have submitted an amicus brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, supporting the SEC's requirement for companies with emissions commitments to disclose their use of carbon offsets. This disclosure is critical for investors and the public to assess the true quality and risks associated with carbon credits, ensuring companies are held accountable for their climate claims and driving genuine emissions reductions.
