French startup VELA - Sail For Goods has raised €40 million ($43 million) to fund the construction of the world’s largest sailing cargo trimaran, a sustainable vessel designed to transport goods like pharmaceuticals, healthcare equipment, and cosmetics across the Atlantic. Led by Crédit Mutuel Impact, 11th Hour Racing, and BPI (French Public Investment Bank), this funding enables VELA to partner with Austal for construction and leverage the expertise of MerConcept for its sailing systems. The first trimaran is set to operate between France’s Atlantic coast and the U.S. East Coast, with operations expected to start in late 2026. By 2028, VELA aims to expand its fleet with four additional vessels, ultimately offering weekly departures to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly cargo shipping across the Atlantic.
