The FDA’s Decision on MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy: OPEN Foundation calls for pragmatism and scientific rigor Full blog post: https://lnkd.in/eaSFZGXb The recent decision by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to withhold approval for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy (MDMA-AT) has sparked significant concern within the scientific and therapeutic communities. Despite the promising evidence supporting MDMA-AT as an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the FDA's decision has delayed access to this potentially life-changing therapy for millions of patients. At the OPEN Foundation, we believe this decision underscores the need for a balanced approach — one that upholds rigorous scientific standards while also addressing the urgent needs of patients. By exploring the contrasting perspectives of regulatory bodies, such as the Dutch State Committee on MDMA, and addressing key methodological and ethical considerations, we advocate for a path forward that emphasizes both scientific integrity and compassionate pragmatism. Throwback to June, to the once again memorable gathering that was #ICPR2024, where I had the pleasure of presenting twice this year. I curated the symposium titled "Bridging the Psychedelic Explanatory Gap," joined by Jeremy I Skipper and Anya Ermakova. Together, we presented empirical data showcasing the significant contributions of psychedelics to the field of consciousness science. Additionally, I participated in a panel discussion with Michiel van Elk, Sue Blackmore and Thomas Metzinger where we delved into the question of how psychedelics can inform and advance the science of consciousness. Grateful to OPEN Foundation for the organising. It is always an honour to be part of such a community-building, intellectually stimulating, and truly interdisciplinary conference where we meet to witness and take part in the expansion of psychedelic research and culture. #ICPR2024 #PsychedelicResearch #ConsciousnessResearch

Key Insights from the Dutch State Commission MDMA Report: "Beyond Ecstasy" In a landmark development for drug policy, the Dutch State Commission on MDMA has unveiled its comprehensive report, “Beyond Ecstasy”. This 200+ page document delves into the multifaceted dimensions of MDMA, encompassing its recreational use, therapeutic potential, and broader public health implications. Here are key highlights: 💡Potential of MDMA-Assisted Therapy “MDMA-assisted therapy has shown significant promise in the treatment of PTSD, particularly for patients who have not responded to traditional therapies. This could represent a major advancement in psychiatric treatment” — MDMA /// Beyond Ecstasy Report To ensure the safe and effective use of MDMA-assisted therapy, the report underscores the need for strict medical supervision and further research. Rogelio Carrillo 🇲🇽 has been appointed “storyteller” by his tradition. His task is to share the knowledge from the Huichol or Wixárika tradition.
