Future quantum computers could potentially solve these problems much faster, processing information based on the laws of quantum mechanics where a vast number of possibilities can be solved simultaneously. In cybersecurity terms, it means malicious hackers in the coming years may be augmented with new abilities to unravel encrypted information previously deemed secure. ... In December, we published our joint research with Microsoft and GitHub on performing static analysis of the top 5000 open source repositories from a cryptographic perspective https://lnkd.in/eb-38hMt That was the start. If you have access to source code, you too can work out if it is Post-Quantum safe and ready, but what if you don't? What if you had a vendor product whereby you need to ascertain if it is indeed doing cryptography in a modern(ish) way? Well this is what we are hoping to address in this release. CryptoMon is a service that allows the interception and analysis of over-the-wire TLS cryptography by Mark Carney and we hope that it is used by all to better understand what is happening at a cryptographic level. IT and Cyber incidents happen more often, and the world should be better prepared for them... Last week, an unfortunate #crowdstrike upgrade caused one of the largest IT outages in history. Luckily, it now looks like things are getting normalised again and kudos 👏 goes out to all the great #admins, #engineers #cybersecurity experts who have been working over the weekend 💪 and are still doing clean-up work now 🙏. The main thing we can all learn from this is that #resilience and #businesscontinuity is not a state, but a continuous process. As digital society, we should learn from such events and think about our dependencies on our critical business processes, our vital infrastructures and our reliance on secure communication. Let’s start to ask these difficult questions. ✅ What could go wrong, and how can we be best prepared? ✅ How can we Test, Test and Test our systems for these possibilities? ✅ How to make sure that we Exercise, Exercise and Exercise? (as different crises have different causes) ✅ What do we have as our back-up plan? When cryptographically relevant quantum computers become available, similar disruptions will occur. This can happen when underlying asymmetric (public key) cryptography, on which we have built our modern IT infrastructure, is deemed to be compromised and therefore not fully trusted anymore. 🔸 Is the world prepared to start migrating to a quantum-resilient digital infrastructure? 🔸 Will all our machines boot-up securely in the near future with quantum-resilient cryptographic protocols, or will the screen turn blue? 🔹 The best time to start preparing for a migration of your infrastructure and assets to a quantum-resilient environment is NOW, let’s not get unpleasantly surprised. New technology today can have a significant impact on innovation, sustainability, connectivity, healthcare, the economy, and social dynamics, while also presenting challenges related to inequality, privacy, and security. The De Nederlandsche Bank has indicated in its Cyber Strategy 2025 that technological development leads to rapidly evolving cyber risks. These technologies also enable malicious actors to carry out increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks and provide access to new modus operandi. The following three technological developments are mentioned: 1) Artificial intelligence – “With the help of artificial intelligence, deepfakes can be created for scalable disinformation campaigns, through social media.” 2) Quantum Computing - “In the near future, quantum computing may be able to break the encryption that institutions use. Are we on a highway to cybersecurity hell with our foot on the accelerator? Yesterday, we explored this at our event 𝑸𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒎 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒚𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚: 𝑪𝒓𝒚𝒑𝒕𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒑𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒉𝒚𝒑𝒆? at the Quantum Meets Q-Expo in Amsterdam. The session had a festive touch, as it also marked the official launch of our UvA research project “Quantum Impact on Societal Security” (QISS). 🥂 We had an amazing lineup of experts who shed light on the quantum cybersecurity threat and the need to get “quantum ready”, from various perspectives. Here are some of my take-aways: 💡 "𝑳𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒊𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒚" —Up until now, cryptographic breaks have not been on widely deployed algorithms. Quantum computers have the unprecedented potential to break widely used encryption methods. The stakes are now higher then ever. With encryption embedded in nearly every aspect of our lives, we cannot risk a society-wide shutdown. 💡 "𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒎" —It was the elephant in the room: what if a CRQC never materialises? Well, that doesn’t matter. The actions that the possibility of a CRQC calls for, such as inventorying current crypto methods, are crucial anyway. Improving crypto management is a no-regret measure that we should prioritise, as the stakes continue to grow in our digitised societies. 💡 "𝑵𝒐 𝒄𝒓𝒚𝒑𝒕𝒐-𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏" —We often delay inevitable tasks, especially those without immediate rewards. Sometimes, the problem is not doing the work but starting it. Nice to be involved in this and to introduce the #Quantum #Cybersecurity situation to our guests from VNO-NCW. Thanks for organising Startup Village Amsterdam !
Op donderdag 16 mei organiseerden we samen met VNO-NCW Noordwest-Holland een inspirerend bezoek aan Startup Village Amsterdam, gevestigd op het Amsterdam Science Park - Science & Business organisation. In dit 'containerdorp' zijn vele start-ups gevestigd, die samenwerken met de Universiteit van Amsterdam en andere organisaties op het Science Park, zoals het ICAI - Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence Leo le Duc, director Science & Business Organisation van het Amsterdam Science Park, heette de aanwezigen van harte welkom en vertelde over de samenwerkingen en mogelijkheden op het Science Park. Vervolgens was het woord aan Esther Smit, Business Director van ICAI, over de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van AI en de kansen voor bedrijven. Ruben Brave, onder meer eigenaar van Entelligence BV en oprichter van het Dutch New Narrative Lab, vertelde over zijn samenwerking met IXA in de Startup Village en 💚 Marcel Bartels, Business Developer bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam, gaf enkele voorbeelden van duurzame ontwikkelingen waar op het Science Park aan wordt gewerkt. Vervolgens gaf Femmie Geradts, directeur van Startup Village, nog een korte introductie alvorens de aanwezigen onder leiding van Danielle Pakes een rondleiding over het park kregen. Daar maakten ze kennis met o.a. Marieke de Ruyter de Wildt van Open Food Chain, Merik te Grotenhuis ✓ van Tellet, Maarten Wijdekop van Quantum Gateway Foundation en Teddy Funger van Anywyse. Ook konden ze binnenkijken in de laboratoria en kassencomplexen, waar grote innovaties plaatsvinden. Tenslotte was er natuurlijk tijd voor een borrel in de zon, tussen de containers van Startup Village. Een inspirerende middag waar de aanwezigen meer te weten kwamen over de nieuwste ontwikkelingen en innovatieve bedrijven!
