Have you heard of the summer slide?   This is when children stop using their educational skills over summer and find themselves ‘sliding’ backwards. If you don’t use your skills, you lose them!   An article by Twinkl, explains that research shows that: ➕ most students lose about two months of maths over the summer 📖 On average, students lose anywhere from 25-30% of their school-year learning in reading over the course of a single summer. 🏫 Teachers typically spend 4-6 weeks re-teaching material students have forgotten over summer break (from research by Scholastic)   So what can you do to stop the slippage? New research by E.ON has revealed what children believe ‘Our Imagined Future’ should be. Here are what they think: ♻️ Nearly 6 in 10 (58%) children would like to see more parks and green spaces such as allotments in their local city ♻️ Over half of children in the UK (54%) believe we need to reduce our use of plastic to make cities more sustainable ♻️ 44% think there should be more sustainable travel options in the future, such as trams and electric buses ♻️ Almost half (47%) feel it is vital to have solar panels on all buildings and bus stops ♻️ Over a third (34%) want to see only electric vehicles on the roads. ♻️ Some children let their imagination run wild, suggesting litter picking robots (19%) and animals living in harmony amongst us (44%) These fantastic ideas have all been turned into a mural by E.ON in Coventry. The UK Department for Education is creating a new science advisory council and is looking for scientists to help “shape the future of Education”. Schools Week reported that the UK government is looking for members from “academic, industry and non-profit organisations” to bring a range of skills to the council including AI, sustainability and ed tech.
