Last month we talked about sharing proof of plastic that was removed and how easy that was. On one photo it’s there, on the next it’s gone. And sharing proof of planted corals, that’s not easy. There’s the impracticality of photographing under water. There’s the limited time divers can remain under water. Lucky for us there is AI. Amsterdammer x Biodiversity strips On October 27, 2025, Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary ❌ ❌ ❌. Boeren van Amstel considers this special occasion a good reason to give the Amsterdam people their own cheese, the Amsterdammer. Crafted in Amsterdam’s backyard, the lush Amstelland. In this specific part of the Netherlands, 18 dedicated farmers work together to improve the biodiversity of the farmlands. For this cheesy project, the Boeren van Amstel decided to Do Sumthing extra. For every kg of cheese sold, they will plant one m2 of biodiversity strip along pastures. You can check the growth of these strips in real-time through the Sumthing platform. “Now, when we add it all up, we don't just end up with ‘SumThing' but with ‘Sum'-marvellous-'Thing's: a delicious cheesy gift, a unique local product ánd tens of thousands of square meters of biodiversity that can be monitored online!" - Michel Penterman, CEO Boeren van Amstel So, in summary: you buy cheese and nature benefits. 🪸 We need to talk about corals 🪸 Because Corals. Are. Awesum. 😎 Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. These hotspots host loads and loads of marine species, that would not be able to live without them. 🐠🐚🧜♀️ However, corals are not only important for the housing, feeding and breeding of species. They also have a role in the chain themselves. They serve as natural barriers, protecting shorelines from erosion, storm surges and tsunamis 🌊 And, last but not least, corals help regulate carbon levels in the ocean and support healthy and resilient oceans 🌎 So far, over 7000 corals were planted through the Sumthing platform, in both the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Our friends at Coral Gardeners and ReefSystems are going all out to collect fragments, set up nurseries, outplant corals and monitor and protect the restored reefs. 🌳 563 Aspen trees planted 🌳 Thanks to Makii, toy design studio, NineOrange, mintBlue,  Eshuis Accountants en Adviseurs and our awesum community, Mossy Earth was able to plant 563 Aspen trees in Northern Schotland. Aspen trees have superpowers; they grow fast, significantly improve the soil quality and enrich biodiversity. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.” Annie Leonard - former executive director of Greenpeace USA The work of our plastic projects does not end with the collection of plastic debris. The debris still has to go somewhere. Where possible, the collected plastic is recycled into new materials. Innovative projects are looking at ways to use non-recyclables for different purposes, for example by upcycling it into building blocks or building panels which can be used for roofs. 🏠 The plastic that cannot be re- or upcycled is treated in waste-to-energy facilities, where the energy released from burning the plastic is converted in electricity or heat. It is even possible to use the mineral value of the waste afterwards as raw material in the production of cement, making it a zero waste process 💫👋 It’s only after all these efforts that away really is away 💪🌎 #plastic #plasticcleanup #zerowaste #nature #dosumthing
